Rock 101 KLOL came on the air with the Who's "I'm free". Who knew that 35 years later it would cease to exist because a corporate wh--e screwed it up and had to change formats to increase ratings.

Gee, how dare a station even consider increasing ratings...unbelievable!!! (sarcasm mode off now)

KLOL had a long run. But the format was tired and out of date, the ratings stunk, it was a decrepit relic of what it once was. Clear Channel saw the future of the market and it was with Hurban, and so far they are doing pretty well with it on Mega 101.

Demographics change. Musical tastes change. Stations have to change or perish. Chickens still lay eggs, cows still give milk, the sun still rises in the east. We move on.

We probably heard much the same bitching and moaning from the fans of the old KTRH-FM when they flipped it to something called "Album Rock"...how dare they!!!

If CC hadn't taken a good thing a F'd it up by playing a bunch of tired out songs, instead of newer stuff and more variety, we'd be talking about MEGA 93.7 now. I agree from a business standpoint it was a good thing to flip to MEGA, 101's ratings have improved, I just think it wouldn't have gone down that way if CC hadn't screwed up the format.

Re: My Point is....

I don't think it was all Clear Channel. That's the easy, uneducated way to lay blame. Look at the music. There were a number of very lean years in rock music as well as very complacent jocks. KLOL never really recovered. It happens. Do you blame Clear Channel for KIOL sucking the high hard one? I actually think KIOL is worse than KLOL was before they blew it up, but then again... that's just myopinion.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but I would submit that it's still pretty slim pickings. There's a lot of crappy music out there, and some of it manages to get on the radio.

Reminds me of working in Hot AC in the mid 90's and thinking to myself that 10 years from now, noone is going to admit to buying half of the CD's we were playing to death.

In the meantime, I'm holding out for someone to add Chingo Bling.
______________

Sgt. Pepper took the band to play?

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Long bad day at work.

Wow, its amazing how the discussion can come full circle. I think Mega plays the crap out of that guy don't they? If it wasn't for KLOL switching to Hurban, where would Chingo Bling call home? :)

Be glad you have Rock 103.7. My CBS-FM is gone, and most likely nobody will pick up oldies in NYC.
______________

Not to step on Metallica's toes, however, it is "Sad, But True."

KLOL NEEDED to die. Clear Channel had RUINED it. It was only a mere shadow of its former self at the end. WCBS did not need to die. It was still great!
______________

Houston Press. Wrapping dishes all over Houston.

Chingo Bling. Sounds vulgar. Guess that's how CC cares to chase the dollar these days.

I'm not sure of the actual ROI on the switch but it must have been quite attractive. I wonder what the promised realization date was and how that is progressing.

This is the point...

Mega needed to arrive in Houston. The demo was there to support the format and the interest was there.
I still don't understand why Reggaeton is all of a sudden spreading like a wildfire. It's been around for 15 years, but starting a year and a half ago it started climbing as a musical force. The genre is mostly immature and the whole concept is very limited. I enjoy hearing Mega every once in a while, but Daddy Yankee, Don Omar and Big Boy even with all they've accomplished still haven't shown this genre's potential.

As for KLOL, CC did kill it in the same way that Cumulus is killing an already dead KIOL.

KLOL needed to go active rock, needed new imaging and a fresher sound.

And a lull in rock music? Are you crazy?

Rock is one of the only genres where truly unique music is being created.
Rap may be the most popular music of today, but just listen to the damn lyrics.
The people on this board know by now that I am a rap "offender." I understand the mechanics of the music and I love the genre as a whole.
However, you can't tell me that 50 Cent and Ja Rule are creating inspired, original music. It's crap that good enough for the status quo. It sells records and thankfully for them, that's what matters.

There's always exciting jazz being created, but nobody cares about that, so throw that out the window.

There is relatively little creative music being released right now. But I promise on my life--
I would take Breaking Benjamin's "So Cold" anyday over 50 Cent's "Just a Lil' Bit" or Pussycat Dolls "Don't Cha'."
Most music that is being played sounds regurgitated.

There's a few people such as Beyonce or Kelly Clarkson who are talented enough that their music escapes the crap bug. It's not original, but at least you can listen to it and say "man, that girl can really wail."

I can't say the same for half of the bands getting recording contracts. Ciara is not a good singer. Frankie J is mediocre, good at best.

I guess people just like it that music is in a lull because they're helping to keep it there by purchasing garbage.
