390-5XXX radio station phone numbers

I am curious why and how the radio stations all seemed to get the 390-5XXX phone numbers for listener call in and contests. I am not sure that all of them had the 5 as the 4th digit, but that is the same as K so it fits in with the call letters. When did this start, and was this done because the listeners were jamming the circuits during the radio call ins? Also, would the 390 number have been assigned to one of the old phone exchange areas (which continued to exist even with the assignment of numbers instead of the exchanges, such as downtown being CApitol or 22 with the 22X-XXXX phone numbers)

I know now with the proliferation of area codes and phone companies and exchange numbers not being strictly geographicaly, we are beyond this (seems like clear channel uses 713-212-XXXX phone numbers). But I am just curious about this and wonder if other cities also had a particular phone exchange for call ins to radio stations. I also wonder when this stopped and the stations moved away from 390 numbers (although many still use the 390 numbers).

The 713-390 (and 214/817-787 in Dallas) are known as choke exchanges....EVERY Central Office has this one exchange choked down to a certain number of calls THRU it to this NXX.....thus not crashing or locking up the CO when a contest is running (hence the all circuits are buzy message). Especially in the older crossbar and NON ESS CO switches, this was a problem...also to allow 911 to keep working!! ALL Radio stations have been required in the past to use the choke numbers on their request lines....otherwise there could be kaos.....as evidence in Dallas years ago when one station had 48 lines put in that were NOT chokes and two CO switches went down that 1st night of the contest!! As to the 5 being the 4 number, it was something to limit the 390 to a certain range......K = 5 on Touchtone Pads so Houston agreed to use the callsign as the number
390-5565 for KLOL, etc...for those with Z or Q in the call, the freq was subbed (390-5593 for 93Q).....NOW they are starting to allow other numbers like 390-1075.....(which they could have in the beginning but it was a pain for the Telco to do). Dallas uses 214/787-787-xxxx with xxxx being the freq (starting with a 0 or 1....0 for those FMs below 100 or AMs below 1000)..
I am NOT sure if the 713-212 is a choke exchange or not.....If NOT, shame on Clear Channel for going their own way..
I know Liberman totally ignored the chokes and went with local numbers...if they ever have a contest that crashes a CO, they could face legal action....(IT IS A FEDERAL crime to interfer with emergency, 911 services!).....

neither does Cumulus except for KRBE, but of course KRBE has had 390-5723 way before it fell into Cumulus' hands

All of Clear Channel has 713-212-xxxx, including business and equipment (isdn, matrix) lines.

Univision is also no longer using the 713-390-****.

we drop them to get the new numbers that actually match our stations frequecies. plus with the big move from our old building, it was the ideal situation to get the new lines working and tested before we moved the jocks and pds over.

KLTN 102.9 fm 713 961 1029
KOVE 106.5 fm 713 439 1065
KQBU 93.3 fm 713 960 9330
KLAT 1010 am 713 961 5528 (1010 wasnt available but if your type KLAT on your phone pad is dials 5528 )
KRTX 980 AM 713 621 0980
KPTY 104.9 FM 713 871 1049

so you see the 390s is no longer the main choke, and they is more choke out there

Nope....390 is still the only official choke line in the Houston Metro...it is NOT assigned to any thing else but broadcast stations.......the numbers above are NOT chokes......NONE of them are (otherwise 1010 would be available...but its already assigned...to a non broadcast use!)....You can get that confirmed with SBC/ATT......IF any contest, etc causes ANY 911 or other emergency difficulties, then guess who will be liable for a lawsuit? A radio station can order any line they want...but that doesnt make it a choke exchange....I keep waiting for the big choas that may happen.....
In Dallas, stations are required to get the 787 choke but only if the station KNOWS WHAT THE H*LL they are doing.....but then if a station asks for a business line and doesnt tell ATT it will be a request, etc line, it will get assigned a normal exchange...(I bet Liberman and other late comers have done that)

Liberman had lines put in to match their freqs...but they arent chokes either......
BUT then radio stations request lines dont have the power they did years ago......
