"3rd degree Burns" KOOL-FM

This "brand new concept" is at least 40 years old. During the summer of 1966 (and probably before that) I listened to KEWB broadcast their last year as a Top-40 programmer with the "sounds of summer" (also known as "poolside sounds"). They didn't have unique sponsors or incessant interruptions between the music as does KOOL's version - at least not as frequent as last Saturday evening's version.

Congrats to Greg Burns for reviving an old classic but brickbats to the author of the Tribune for lack of research.

Greg's one of the best...glad to hear he's spending at least some time on the air again, after about 15 years in sales.

---Michael Hagerty

I love how the author refers to KZON as a “dance music” station. But then again, if he was in his childhood in the 1970’s, he probably thinks that any music with a beat is an evil descendant of (gasp) disco.

It's one of the most creative radio shows to hit weekend airwaves in a long time.

Huh? I thought the previous Sat. night oldies show (w/Dick Bartley) was more creative.

KOOL's Sat. night show is the same music & format as they play all day Sunday, Etc.
The only difference is, Burns occasionally mentions it's a pool party.
No interviews, no live call in requests, Etc.

How creative is that?

In Fargo, ND (the armpit of small market broadcasting) they do the "Back Yard" grill out for TV wx segments from 4:30 pm - 6:30pm where everything is bartered out, and the winners are chosen by random draw. The Gas Grill used is eventually donated to charity.

The pool party would be somewhat along the same lines.. probably more radio friendly. 8)

We were splashing away in the bunker last night and enjoyed every drop of the pool/marggie party. No one hits a post like Greg "3rd Degree" Burns.

Enjoyed a rare listen to the voice behind the imaging, too. I've been a Rob Trygg fan since his overnight stint on 98.

I thought I'd give the pool party one more try and tuned in sometime between 9-10 last night. Caught the very end of a classic rock song then 10 commercials/promos in a row before two disco songs forced my finger to hit the "off" button.

I'm also pretty sure it isn't a good idea to have a primary sponsor selling alcoholic products considering the target audience of this show.

Adios KOOL.

Didn't know their target demo was 12-17. ???
I thought it was 25-54.

Plus a big chunk of 55-64 which of course the twenty-something
ad buyers (and a certain cranky Old Gringo ;)) dismiss outright.

And whether it's a real pool or a fake pool (if it's real, where is it
Greg?), he did indeed hit the post nicely several times during the
first hour when I was tuned in.

I heart Rob Trygg... He does some of the finest work known to radio period. I wish he would come and work for me in Lloydland.

More syndication? That's creative stuff.

And, the playlist on the seventies programming is pretty good. I think the East Valley Tribune article says Burns picks his own music for the pool party show.

I credit KOOL for trying something different. Hey Kris "Brought Back The Fun" Abrams, how about opening the party up to the public? Afraid we'll pee in the pool?

Yeah, creative would be playing some light jazz from the 70's. Chuck Mangione would be good. Can you imagine the reaction if KOOL played a little "Feels So Good" to kick off the Saturday night show?

If it were my station, I'd play some Chuck Mangione. Not enough flugelhorn on the radio anymore, in my humble opinion. Is there a syndicated show dedicated to light jazz from the 70's that KOOL could pick up for Saturday night?

And who the heck is Rob Trygg?

Maybe I'm missing something? It sounds like the same selection of songs that they play on their "Sunday 70s"
...Maybe just in a different order.

And.. what's with this 80s music they've been playing lately? I heard some Elton John from 1983. How soon before they start playing Madonna, Culture Club, Dead or Alive, Etc.

Personally I don't like it, I think most people listened to KOOL for the 60s & 70s stuff.
I may head for XM radio if this keeps up.

Ditto on Rob Trygg. I don't know who he is either.

Do you mean Rob "Dr. Rock" Trygg?!?!?!? Doritos, Grape soda & D&D!
