3TV Forecasters Thin Bench

Over the weekend, Lina de Florias did Good Morning Arizona weather. Kim Quintero was sick. Kim worked the weather desk most of the week, subbing for April Warnecke. BTW, I think April has been off air for the last 3 weeks. Kim and Kylee Cruz have been doing weather segments.

3TV doesn't have a (former) weatherperson they can call to do weather? I under Saturday, because, what was said, Kim called out that morning. But what about Sunday morning?

Wasn't Rich Dalquist available? He's been a "fallback" guy for Meredith for the last couple of years. Lina did weather this morning as well.

Don't know what's going on with April. She apparently hasn't left the station (still has her bio on the website, and is still featured in ads). Hopefully it's nothing serious.

It was previously mentioned here that one of her children has some sort of on-going illness. I wonder if perhaps that is why we haven't seen her lately.

Steve Garry has also been a fallback guy -- guess he wasn't available this weekend either.

I'm surprised that Meredith hasn't hired another meteorologist/reporter, particularly since something has been going on with April for the past couple of years. Kim Quintero has routinely fills in for April on Thursday and Friday (and sometimes Wednesday as well).

We need a separate person to do weather? Migod! Weather in Phoenix can be done by a 6th grader.

April had foot surgery 2 times. The second one was to replace a screw from the first surgery. She said on FB that she would be back today. 2-26.

And she was on air this morning! Foot surgery can be tricky -- glad she's better! Surprised that management didn't have a better plan for a "known" surgery and the potential of one of the others being ill.

I don't follow April (or any other TV personality) on Facebook and didn't about her return. I remember her talking about having foot surgery. I also remember hearing about one of her sons having a medical problem. I'm also glad she's back.

I don't follow her either. I simply did a "KTVK April Warnecke" search and her FB page came up.

I think there should be a separate person doing weather. As well as sports (which is a whole other subject: having four major professional sports teams and a university in its immediate markets, Phoenix TV sports is kind of weak).

Could a 6th grader do Phoenix weather? Sure. Could a 6th grader do Phoenix news and sports? Sure. But we also watch for experience.

There's nothing in local sports, other than high school, that can't be found on the web, a phone app, or Sportscenter. The days of a fat guy reading scores and interviewing local stars fro 10 minutes are long over. The web does the former and sports radio does the latter -- better and sooner in both cases.

Kim and Ashlee DeMartino were off Saturday morning/early evening. Steve Garry made an appearance.

On Sunday, Kim was back on GMAZ reporting live from the Aloha Festival and Paul Horton subbed on Sunday evening (and made it sound like he didn't want to be there at all). At least, they brought in Steve this time. :)

In contrast, over on 12 News, Krystle recorded a forecast after the morning newscast and they just played it in the evening. They made it seem like she was there (i.e. "Thank you, Krystle"), but she didn't give the current conditions and the futurecast just happened to start at 11:30am on Sunday.

Ashlee Martino had her baby. It seems that the sub will be Mallory Moore, who isn't on their website. Also Steve Garry came in. Over the past weeks, I've seen Royal Norman and April Warnecke work GMAZ weekends, mostly Sundays. Kylee Cruz takes up the GMAZ slack when Warnecke works her sometimes 4 day work week.

Royal was off last week, which made it even trickier, but Mallory, Steve, and Kimmy Q filled in. On FB, Mallory said that she is simply freelancing for 3/5. She fills in on weather and/or news reporting as needed. So, as a freelancer, she is not listed on their website.

I've noticed a general trend here towards using non-weather people to do the weather. Look at all the other weekend am newscasts other than GMAZ and you will see one of the anchors doing the weather. And, often, those anchors will sub for weather on other newscasts (whien the meteorologists are sick). And ABC15 is getting Kaley back -- she can do just about everything!!

Ya anything

Kaley can do anything! Including making me change the channel!!!

I fail to understand the ad push on KNXV to welcome her back. She will be reading the news from a teleprompter. The morning show has no guests, no remotes, and basically no personality...which I like, because all I want is quick news. I'm not understanding the hoopla.

AGREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yet, KNXV has tried to bolster its morning newscast for years. They tried Rebecca Thomas, brought back Connie Colla, hired Dan Spindle from FOX10, and now Kaley O'Kelley among other moves. Every successful newscast is a combination of format and people. For some (KP and Joe), it might simply be the format. For others, it may be the people (e.g. they liked Connie's monologue at the end of the newscast). For most, it is a combination of the two.

If by "bolstering its morning newscast" means alienating and annoying their viewers by endlessly welcoming a reporter, then I guess KNXV has won.

And, after weeks of "LET'S WELCOME HER," now we have to listen to "WELCOME! SHE'S HERE." I just want news...it's so ridiculous.
