3TV SPORTS ANCHOR REPLACEMENT.

I WONDER WITH ROSS SHAMAMUKO (3TV MAIN SPORTS ANCHOR) WHO HAS LEFT TO SAN DIEGO, CA TO TAKE ON ANOTHER JOB THERE. I WONDER WHO WILL REPLACE HIM OR WILL BRAD CESMAT WILL RPLACE HIM. I THINK 3TV WILL LOOK ELSEWHERE.

There was a new jock doing an abbreviated sportscast in the
6pm half-hour...don't know whom as no name was fonted.

How long has he been on-air at KTVK?

Who? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

John Gambadoro said it best last week on KTAR when he commented on "Ross Shimawhatsisname" - Does it really matter? Local TV sportscasts during the news are becoming irrelevant. Who's left of any real stature now that Gary Cruz retired? Jude LaCava (Channel 10), Craig Fouhy (Channel 15), and maybe Chris Corragio (Channel 5) - and that's about it.

Sports fans already know the scores and highlights. Either we read or watched them on the web or on SportsCenter. If there weren't any local game highlights (and most of the fans already watched the game), there is little need for a local sportscast. The other viewers don't care.

The only exception I can think of is for high school sports, which are rarely covered by anyone other than the local TV stations, and even then, they can't cover every school in the Valley.

I tend to agree with Gambo - if local sports during the news disappeared, few would care. But then, with the availability of updated news 24/7 from at least eight web sources in metro Phoenix (KFYI & KTAR radio, KTVK, KPHO, KSAZ, KNXV, AZCentral/KPNX, and the EV Tribune), there is little need for local television newscasts at all other than 30 minutes at Noon, 6, and 10, plus a couple of hours in the morning.

I believe that Tyler Baldwin, a GA reporter and frequent GMAZ Sat news anchor, has been subbing on Brad Cesmat's days off.

Fixed:

there is little no need for local television newscasts.

Since they don't cover anything of importance (or simply repeat the national stories). I don't need to know about tomorrow's weather (same as today's) or the latest auto accident near Casa Grande.

Let's keep on going! Why do we need a local newscast at all?

Why do we need local radio sports if we have other ways to scores & highlights? I like Gambo and he's stating his opinion but it's not nice when someone is telling you YOUR job is also irrelevant.

The new Sports guy at KTVK is named Tim Ring...also, he is married to Fay Fredericks of KPNX.
From IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0727558/bio
Award winning sportscaster Tim Ring made his film debut in the 1996 production of "Reggie's Prayer". ...Born in Chicago, Ring has always had an affection for sports. While attending DePaul University in 1989, Ring took a job as a sports producer at WGN Television.

I still think we do, but since most of the current newscast time is spent on "stuff," I think 30 minutes of strictly news at Noon, 6, and 9/10 is more than enough. If a station (**cough** KTVK **cough** KSAZ **cough**) wants to do a magazine-type show before or after, then that's fine. American Idol BS highlights and The Garden Guy have no business on a newscast.

Because the local talk shows actually talk about what's going on in sports (well, most of the time). A 10-minute scores-and-highlights update at 10:20 is too much because most of those who would be interested already have that info. The Sunday night highlight shows are still important as a wrap-up, but there is no need for Mr. LaCava and his compatriots to recite what we've already heard or seen every day, several times a day. 85% of us can watch SportsCenter for that, and those who don't, and are interested, do have a radio.

I like Gambo and he's stating his opinion but it's not nice when someone is telling you YOUR job is also irrelevant.

I'm not saying that broadcast journalism is irrelevant. It's not. There is still a need for good reporting. Unfortunately, the reporters here aren't allowed to do that in many cases (read: political reporting, given the incestuous relationship between many in the Phoenix media and gummint over the years), or can't do it because they don't have the experience that Market #12 should require. But these reports can be put on the station's website, viewable at any time, as well as maybe airing a shorter version on the newscast.

OK, now you've gone too far...I like the Garden Guy on Saturday mornings. :D

I don't believe that GMAZ is supposed to be a strictly news show. It's 6 minutes of news plus 24 minutes of features/advertisements -- perfect for a weekend morning for sure!

Yeah, that "stuff" is OK for a weekend morning show. or the weekday show after, say, 8 AM when most of us who want or need real news and traffic have already left the house. But stick to news between 5 and 8 AM at least, and at noon, 6, and 9/10.

Run the features at, say, 5 PM. Good Evening Arizona at 5, NewsChannel 3 at 6 & 9, for example.

What about Fox 10's hour-long evening newscast? They read the news so fast that, if they stuck strictly to hard news, they would run out of news before the end of the hour :D
