3TV Technical Difficulties

My main TV is normally tuned to 3TV evenings. Today (3/16/21) I walked by and saw Suzanne Bissett and Brandon Hamilton: Your Life Arizona show. The crawler says 3TV News at 8PM is off the air and is having technical difficulties. The news will be back on at 9PM.

That explains my post from a few minutes ago. They've had a lot of issues lately. I didn't see the crawl.

Typically when these things happen, it's because the automation system that powers the newscast on-air production has crashed. When those systems work, they make it possible to churn out lots of newscasts with a smaller production staff - there's one person basically hitting "next" to keep bringing up combinations of camera angles and graphics that have been programmed in sequence by a producer. But when they stop working.... no newscast!

(It can also sometimes be the result of outsourcing master control to a hub. If the communications link between the local production control room and the remote hub goes down, syndicated and network and prerecorded programs can still play out, but nothing live can get on the air.)

They aired news on 3 at 4, 4:30, and 6, but not at 5 (I wasn't home at 5:30 to check). They also did not air news on 5 at 6:30. I don't know where their master control is, but I always assumed it was in Phoenix. Is that wrong?

3TV and CBS5 went off the air at 4:54AM. I know because my picture was stuck on 3TV at that time. Going to Arizona Family's Facebook page the studio is down. They have lights but no other systems.

As of 8 AM, there's still no local programming, but at least the transmitters are on. Both 3 and 5 are running the CBS morning show. For some reason, 5 is able to run local commercials, but 3 goes black.

Of the subchannels, 3.2 (Comet) is a blue screen, 3.3 (Circle) is color bars, and 5.4 (ShopLC) is "frozen green snow." Channels 3.4 (ThisTV), 3.5 (Weather), 5.2 (Cozi), and 5.3 (Dabl) are operating as usual.

Looks like everything's back to normal. Channel 3 is running Your Life Arizona, 5 is running Dr. Phil, and all subchannels on both stations are operating.

Meredith consolidated master control for all their stations in Atlanta last month. Prior to that, Phoenix was their west coast hub. Making it look like a lean operation as sale bait??? They've had many technical issues since the switch-off, looking from when this article was dated.
