3WS #1

The holiday book has carried 3WS to #1 on the strength of the Christmas music.

Seems like it happened lots of places, KVIL in Dallas and WWRM in Tampa had the same results....

Lots of double-digit Christmas-music shares. Look at WBEB Philadelphia. It's been a long time since a big-market
station pulled a number like that.

3WS is an interesting outcome. I wouldn't have called that one, but I've spent less and less time with 3WS since
they dropped oldies and became "DVE Light," as a friend of mine calls it.

Guess those fellers are smarter than I reckoned.

wow, what a number!!!! X-MAS RULES... the stations that ignore it really hit the ground hard. Is Q even relevant anymore? Why and how did they kill that station? Good going for the christmas carolers!!!

WISH also had some big increases. 3WS and WISH success comes at the expense of STAR and Q.

Q92.9 really has a good opportunity right now. The Star 100.7 of this week is nothing at all like the Star 100.7 of last week. They're playing Jason Derulo and Pitbull, trying to hang onto the B94 audience. That's going to turn off plenty of Star listeners. If Q slides just a little bit more in the Hot AC direction, run some billboard and TV campaigns, they could easily pick up a good chunk of that audience.

But they announced they had gone "hot" a couple of months ago and have done a 180 all the way back to what is virtually their "Lite FM" sound musically.

The other format that took a big hit during the holiday book was conservative talk. WPGB was down here, same goes for WFLA in Tampa....

I believe Y97 beat KDKA once in the early 80's.

With no disrespect to anyone, I don't think Y-97 ever got much above a 5 share. When WDVE finally passed KDKA for
the first time in the early '90s, they were widely hailed as the first station to beat KDKA since the days of Rege Cordic
at WWSW.

Yes, I can't recall that anyone topped them in 12+. It would have been big news in the early '80s, because KDKA was still getting shares around 15 then.

Sorry, turns out it was 25-54 in the Winter 84 book.... they were #1 middays, afternoons and weekends, and 3rd in AM drive behind Bogut and O'Brien & Garry.....

Andy, if you're not back in four hours, I'm going all Christmas Music! ;)

Something I noticed and deserves mention with the sports talk boom we're having in Pittsburgh.

I noticed that from the Holidays to January WEAE didn't lose any ratings- in fact they went up by 0.1.

Not just in Pittsburgh, but in most markets sports talk gets a boom during football season. But here WEAE kept their audience, at least in the first trend.

Have the Pens become this popular, along with the success of Pitt basketball?

Did Steelers fans want to have one more listen or comment of what went wrong last season?

Or has the format become viable enough that while it certainly isn't immune from rises and falls due to the performances of the home teams, it's become stable and the folks on Ardmore Blvd. are doing a pretty good job?

It's Pitt basketball and especially the Pens. I remember when regular football season was actually still going, seeing Pens displays in store windows, etc. I don't EVER remember that happening before.
