I heard "Oh What a Night (December 1963)" by the Four Seasons 3 days in a row this week between 10:30 AM - 11 AM at my job. Did someone request this song deliberately? Just how many songs does 3WS have in their never-changing playlist? 200? 250? I guess they don't play any "deep" tracks at all. Do they play only what Clear Channel tells them to play, or are they just plain scared?

It's almost criminal concerning what's happened to this once-great oldies station. If only WJPA had more power...
On a side note, I've had more than one high school student tell me how much they dislike 'their' music. When exposed to the Stones, later Beatles, the Doors and so on, they get how much better the music is.

I agree Greg...if JPA had more power! Also curious to know, did 3WS also play Piano Man 3 days in a row from 1030am-11am? And Greg...my grandson who is 13 likes Classic Rock too. When he's in the car with me he never objects to listening to WCDK, or if we are near New Martinsville WXCR!

The songs are all schedule by computer. When they and where they spit out is usually about a day's worth distance because of the amount in their library, which is about 250-300 core songs. They play what they play because they test songs periodically.

So they should sacrifice a station that bills big numbers in 25-54 women to get crushed by DVE chasing male numbers. Not the best plan. And CBS-FM is classic hits, not classic rock. (@MsMR...Classic rock = 102.5 in Tampa, Classic hits = Q105... I think you mean classic hits).

Oh, you mean "they" = CBS. I was confuddled by your post.
I think at this point the only thing that hasn't been on 100.7 is a thrash metal in the daytime/opera after dark format. (Heyyyy.....)
Regarding the original post, 3WS has absolutely no variety in their song selection whatsoever. I have been listening to them since WWSW switched to an oldies format back in 1990. When I sit back and see how a once-great station has fallen into a big yawn, it really depresses me. The standard playlist I hear every day, every day, every day...etc, is so repititious, it's ridiculous. The trouble is, and the reason I keep listening, is that they are the only game in town. I love WJPA, but their signal cannot be picked up in the building where I work, and I listen to the radio all day in my office, so I get to hear Piano Man, Marguaritaville, & December 1963 all day, every day instead.

Like it or not, the three songs you mention are high testing researched songs. So you are going to hear them often. Now, if you're actually hearing them every single day at work, then there is a music scheduling issue. If they schedule through all dayparts, and hours, the most you should ever hear them at work is 2 or maybe three times a week.

That's the point. That is EXACTLY what is happening. The same, very small amount of songs, are repeated every day, sometimes multiple times a day. It's not a matter of hearing Billy Joel every day - that's to be expected - but the fact that people are sitting at the bar and putting bread in his jar EVERY. FREAKING. DAY.

Like the time years ago when I heard WKBN in Youngstown play Paul Simon's Kodachrome

Classic Hits stations should not be repeating any songs multiple times a day. Even with a small library, that should not be happening. Is Clear Channel corporate scheduling the music? Or is it being done in house? Sounds like someone is not paying attention.

Probably. And for the most part, no station owned by a big group has taken requests for the last 20 years except when they are specifically doing request segments. And even those usually are planned to some extent.
Here's a prime example of how the same songs are played each day on 3WS. The song is "Peace of Mind" by Boston. It played on Wednesday sometime during the morning. It played yesterday around 3:15 p.m. This morning, it just played again shortly before 8:00 a.m. On the other hand, while driving in to work, Pete Povich on WJPA was playing a version of "Right Down the Line" by Bonnie Raitt. Now, I know that version is not an "oldie", per se, but it still was something you won't hear every single day of the week. And I agree with the comment about so-called request segments. You ask for a certain song and many times you will hear "Oh, we can't play that one." And I'm not even talking about calling up with some obscure tune nobody ever heard of. I'm talking about a more mainstream song that just doesn't fit their "classic hits" criteria anymore, because it is too far back into the '60's, or too slow, or it gives the PD gas. But call and request "American Pie" or "Daniel" and voila, it plays. Wasn't repetitious mind-control something they used during the Cold War? Oh, sorry, I can't say that. That was during the '50's & '60's, and 3WS doesn't recognize those decades anymore.

That's from a brand new album, so unless a "classic remakes" format comes around, forget about that one on 3WS.
