3WS Slogan

I noticed listening to 3WS this week, the slogan is now saying Pittsburgh's greatest hits instead of the greatest hits of the 60's and 70's. Does that mean they will be adding music from other decades? Thoughts?

Oh, lets hope so. because pittsburgh doesn't have enough stations already playing the top 3 hits from the last 30 years. I just love a dry seqway from Enya to Foghat

Amen to that! When a station only plays a few dozen songs over and over and over and over and over and over, what difference does it make if they swap out a dozen from one decade with a dozen from another decade. It will still drive listeners to hit the station button when they hear the same old song for the 47th time in a week.

Then again, maybe it's time to burn out a handful of songs from the 80's now.

They've already been creeping into the '80s as they've advanced the clock. "I Can Dream About You" by Dan Hartman has been in regular rotation for a while and they're adding stuff like Toto.

I've mostly given up on 3WS because I got sick of "Candle In The Wind" and the Rod Stewart catalog.

WJPA is still solid and when I'm out of range, I switch to the Pickle at 92.1 for oldies. Much more '60s-centered with a wider list than 3WS. Seems like everything except AM drive comes off the satellite, so you don't have to live with the silly "pickle" air names.

Yes. Take some of the pressure off WSSH, WLTJ, 100.7...

I miss the days when 3WS actually had an on-air playlist that was deeper than Paris Hilton's brain pan.

If I hear Kokomo one more time on there, I think I'm going to hurt someone.

More on Pickles and other assorted vegetables.

The Pickle (aka WKPL-FM 92.1 in Ellwood City) utilizes an ABC feed outside of AM drive. It also airs on WPKL-FM 99.3 in Uniontown, WASP-AM 1130 (daytime only) in Brownsville and WPNT-AM 1340 in Connellsville (a local 1,000-watt outlet sometimes receptable as far north as Irwin).

WJPA-AM 1450/FM 95.3 utilizes a syndicated oldies service nights and overnights. Except for morning drive and local newscasts one also can hear that particular service on WCNS-AM 1480 in Latrobe.

(I haven't tried it recently, but since WJPA-AM 1450 in Washington and WDAD-AM 1450 in Indiana both employ oldies formats, it can seem at times as if dueling bands are the rule of the day where those signals overlap ... again, in Irwin and vicinity, for instance.)

One more station you might try is WTYM-AM 1380 in Ford City-Kittanning, which has a local mix of oldies during daylight hours. (It goes to 24 watts after sunset then I think off the air at 10 p.m., but after sunset one doesn't hear it beyond greater Kittanning.)

For what it's worth, it also runs Radio Pennsylvania news on the hour (so you get to hear the full-blown version of what KQV-AM 1410 picks and chooses from the statewide network).

Just found out today, via Scott Fybush: WPNT changed calls to WYJK, but is sticking with the Pickle simulcast. The ABC service is known, unimaginatively, as "Oldies Radio".

That's Westwood One's oldies syndicated thing. It's the one that features KHJ legend Humble Harve Miller. It's known, similarly unimaginatively, as "The Oldies Channel".

The best syndicated service would be a heretofore untried combination of ABC and WW1.

I tried to listen to mainstream radio again today and was so disgusted by the same small rotation of crap I went to my iPod, its amazing 3WS adds another decade to their slogan and 4 songs into the playlist which takes them up to 304. and is it me or does the jocks on 3WS just sound like they just don't give a rats

and I have to admit I'm slowly, very slowly becoming a Bob & Tom fan I just wish I could mute that damn laughter they apply to their own bits. That stuff works on TV back in the 70's with Carol Bennett and Tim Conway because we get the visual, on Bob & Tom I just don't get it

Have you ever heard a commercial on that radio station? Aside from tape-delayed high school football and basketball games, I' don't think i ever heard anything that was brining revenue in. Are they making a living brokering the weekends to religious programming or something along those lines?<P ID="signature">______________

Regrettably, I haven't had a chance to listen on Sunday mornings, not in downtown Irwin, but I've not heard anything brokered there at other times. I know the owner also runs two AMs and an FM in Cambria County and may have an LPTV in Indiana, but otherwise I'm not sure where its revenue stream comes from.

Rest assured I happen to know the owner of WTYM and know first hand that all of his stations are performers, in their own right, with no debt on any of the stations. Is there any other entity in the area, large or small, who can claim a debt free operation?

As someone who travels extensively in the Kiski Valley and am acquainted also with some WTYM voices, past and present, I'm pleased to hear all of that.

Vernal Enterprises, also licensee of WNCC, WRDD and an FM in Cambria County.

Greatest Hits is an all encompassing positioner. It's better than era defining positioners such as 60s/70s.

80's titles on an "oldies station". What a crime! Kill it now.
