4 hour gigs too long????

I've noticed that all the local talk shows on WPRO will be 4 hour shows.
I just think it's an hour too lengthy . 4 , 4 and 4 also kills another host.
I find Dan Yorke sometimes looking for something to fill that 4 th hour.
Seems like 3 hours would be a perfect fit. I noticed Savage, Rush, Hannity,
DR. Laura, Laura Ingraham ect. all have 3 hours.. Wonder if time will change that?

3-7 is a popular slot in Boston too.

But, if they limited shows to 3 hours, it would make more sense.

6-9, 9-Noon, Noon-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-Mid, etc.

FM Morning shows typically do 4 hours. Stern used to do 5. As a matter of fact he still does! But for some reason your typical show on the AM dial seems to get tiresome after 3 hours. I think that WPRO just squeezed an extra hour out of everybody without an increase in pay. That way they could eliminate a whole four hour shift each day and just save the money for Buddy. That's understandable. They had to save money somehow. That was the only way that they could give Buddy his $300,000 a year.

Sky...looking back on it's history, Pro had been 4 hour shifts (so has WHJJ for that matter). It was when Ruch came to town that middays got split to 3 hour shifts; but PM has pretty much stayed 4 hours (except for the time before the score when Sportsbeat ran on WPRO).

Good point wknd92......This is true. Hey this reminds me of something. I remember a year or so ago Rush was actually expanding his show to 4 hours. However the 4th hour would not be offered to affiliates. It was only going to subscribers of Rush Limbaugh's website. I remember Dan Yorke being all kinds of pissed about it. He was shouting on air about how Rush was doing a three hour commercial each day inviting all his listeners to tune away from the station and continue to listen to him for a 4th hour somewhere else. For obvious reasons Dan did not like this. Rush was essentially eating into Dan's audience now as he tried to lure them away. But this was more than a year ago. Does Rush still have this 4th hour on the internet and does he still talk about it on the air?

Hello all!
Well I remember Jack Comely, Sherm, Paul Perry, Buddy 1, Arlene, Bob Grant, David Brudenony, Pat Sullivan, Steve Kass , Moe Laurzer,Tony Di biasio, Mary Ann Sorentino, and Steve White ALL with 3 hours or less.
Now, many of these hosts were before Rush.

Off topic but, Matty, I'm very happy for you!:)

Cheers,
Chatty.

I worked at WSAR in 1989 when we made the transition to a talk station. Rush was the first talk show we added to the schedule. Back then he was only on for two hours. Noon to 2 PM.

Unlike FM morning shows (and Stern, et al) talk show hosts are usually solo, thus a 3 hour show is a hefty-enough load. You don't want the host sounding at all fatigued as the show winds down. Many hosts will have no problem with 4 hours on most days, but there will be plenty of days where that 4th hour will sound like one hour too much. I want a consistant performance from the first to the last minute.

P.S. That fourth Limbaugh hour for subscribers was an underhanded scam that was a shameless attempt to screw affiliates.

obviously, this is a stream limited to talk radio. if you're talking music radio, a four hour shift is really just 90 minutes in the studio.

and we owe it all to voicetracking.

I've never done a 4-hour show, but I've done 2 consecutive 3-hour shows (covering for someone).

Other than going stir crazy, it's a lot easier if you're not talking the whole time. I wonder how Savage has not lost his voice after screaming so much ;D

Ah MR Infidel! dear friend! WE monitor this SAVAGE and we see the zionists at work ha haar.
Anyhow this SAVAGE is on for 3 hours not the 4 you all talk of.
I long for Al Franken and perhaps Hilary Rodman Clinton having a talk show and presidentcy for more
than four of these hours and what do you say of this?

The PRIMARY reason that Hannity, Dr. Laura, Ingraham, Savage, etc. have 3 hour shows is to
give them daypart uniformity on both coasts. Usually the shows are fed back to back...therefore
its a little easier for LA or SF to just pick up the feed on the dish at the same time of day that they
would in NY or Boston. Makes it a little less tempting for the West Coasters to start "moving it around".
