43rd CMA Awards

Watched and thought it was a good show.

Is it me or does anyone else think that Taylor Swift is way over rated. She sounds fine on her recorded material but when she is live she just can't sing. She seems always flat. I think she is just a "cute" product of some great studio work. The right equipment and software can make anyone sound great.

I don't deny that she is selling well. She has radio hits and is selling tickets but is it more great marketing than talent?

Anyone else? ???

I agree that Taylor is a talented songwriter but her live performances leave a lot to be desired. When mixed in a studio, her singing is much better (CD or music videos). I was also struck be her opening number on the CMAs...seemed more like something that Britany Spears would be singing on an MTV music show...just did not seem to be very country.

On CMT.com they have all the winners from last night plus they have the "fan vote" as taken on CMT.com. The fans disagreed with the CMA committee on many of the awards.

I only watched a small portion so far... It's still sitting there on my DVR. I watched George sing Twang. He's still incredible, but his age is really showing as it looked like he was struggling to get some of those longer notes out.

I have always thought Taylor was way cute and a good writer and she uses the magic of auto-tune (look it up!) to sound good on recordings. I hope she develops her vocals more and can break out of that crutch, she can be so huge!

I was very happy that Lady Antebellum won Vocal Group! They have had a slow, but steady rise with most of their singles. Their latest, Need You Now, is just outstanding musically. The video is a little kitschy but the song rocks.

I need to watch the rest but those are the highlights of the parts I did see.

Did you hear that Wynonna criticized Taylor Swift and said she wasn't ready to win all those awards? I can see both sides of the argument. Just based on sales and radio play Taylor Swiift deserves to win. Although some awards such as entertainer of the year might have been pushing it.

I saw a funny post on Yahoo reacting to Wynona's comments A young lady (who looked to be in her late teens, around Swifts age) said that it sounds like the "big woman with orange hair and skin" is jealous that her time is done. What really made me laugh is that she said "and to be honest I never even heard of this Wynonna Judd woman".

I tend to agree with her first remark. To a middle-aged guy like me it seems hard to believe that anyone doesnt' know who Wynonna is, but to put things in perspective Wynonna's hit-making days were pretty much over by the time the poster was in the first grade.

I was happy to see that both Taylor Swift and Brad Paisley acknowledged "country radio" in their thank you words.

Even with the growth of new media, it's still really important to performers that their music get on FM radio.

I have nothing against Wynonna, but with her REALLY orange hair and the bad fake bake, Its kinda hard to take her seriously. She was kind of like the Kanye West of the CMA's.

I taped it.

The only country music I heard was performed by either Brad Paisley or Carrie Underwood or both as part of their hosting duties.

Just kidding. I heard George Strait sing "Twang". But why that incredibly annoying rock video mess behind him? It's so out of place with someone like him. Its bad enough I had to see similar mess as I fast-forwarded through the bad stuff. But at least it didn't last as long that way.

And then there was Billy Currington's "People Are Crazy".

I didn't listen to Miranda Lambert, but maybe I should have. I heard her "White Liar" when she was nominated and again during the closing credits and I liked it.

I didn't care for The Zac Brown Band's version of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia". I tried, considering I like Charlie Daniels' version, but even that one kind of gets on my nerves. It's really the fiddle playing I like in that one.

I wonder how they got Little Jimmy Dickens to do what Kanye West did.

I wasn't sure I should try Kenny Chesney and Dave Matthews together. Dave Matthews is a rocker. It wasn't country, but I liked it. Sort of like what Michael Buble does when he's not doing jazz and easy listening standards.

I was pleased to see The Eagles were at least nominated for something.

Did I imagine it or was ZZ Top there? One of them was, or someone that sure looked like him.

Oh, yeah, the Barbara Mandrell tribute. That was good. I heard "I Don't Want to Be Right" on the radio yesterday. Not country, but I like it. "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool" just barely is country, but a lot of country wasn't back then. But it still sounded good.

At least THIS year they bothered to acknowledge those introduced to the Hall of Fame with more than just their names. I remember when they used to do biographies of these people.

I was happy for Roy Clark, but where was he?

I've missed Charlie McCoy. He was the "Hee Haw" musical director for years. He and Roy worked together a lot and no one mentioned that.
