440: Satisfaction website shutting down at the end of the year

The website 440: Satisfaction, which has long served as kind of a tracking tool for those wondering "where are they now?" about radio people, has an announcement posted stating that the site will be shutting down at the end of the year.

The site's proprietor, who worked in many markets under the name Johnny Williams, thanked users for their years of patronage and cited changes in the industry along with advancing age as reasons why he is winding it down.

As time goes on it seems the task of maintaining this has turned increasingly grim with the obituaries ramping-up. Something I'm sure I would not enjoy if I were in my 80's.

It's why I will be wrapping up my NorthEast Radio Watch column in the next few years, too.

It's no fun anymore just writing about layoffs and sign-offs and deaths.

Does anyone have the contact for this? I could preserve the data on WorldRadioHistory as an historical resource.

Johnny Williams' two longest runs were at KHJ, Los Angeles, where he did nine years (1965-1974) in overnights (12 Midnight-6:00 a.m.), apart from a few weeks in early 1967, when he did 9-noon, and at WTAE, Pittsburgh, where he spent ten years working with his former KHJ PD, Ted Atkins.

Johnny personally engaged with his users of his website, and I always thought Johnny Williams was Outasight ar KHJ, the only guy there that did 6 hour Shifts. Just heard a Bill Wade tape recently, wow!

Were you ever able to arrange that, David?

On that note, were you still planning to pursue archiving laradio.com? I recall some discussion about that (including yourself) in its own thread, but at the time, nobody seemed to want to raise the issue with his widow so soon after.

I notice that the site now lists a shutdown date of 3/1/2027, which would mean it's got about 17 more months to go. Not sure when that date was pushed back from end of '24.

It probably wasn't. Johnny and Carol stopped adding content at the end of '24, but there was probably an existing contract for the domain with a 2027 expiration.
