49ers Sign Radio Deal with KTRB-860 (ESPN Deportes)

Relese Dated July 24, 2012

The San Francisco 49ers announced a landmark radio broadcast agreement with 860 AM ESPN Deportes. The agreement runs through the 2018 season and will provide Spanish language 49ers programming on one of the strongest signals in the Bay Area.

ESPN Deportes launched in the San Francisco market last summer on KTRB 860 AM, a 50,000 watt station that covers the entire Bay Area and reaches deep into Northern and Central California markets like Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto and as far south as Merced. ESPN Deportes is the only 24-hour national Spanish-language sports radio network.

“We are pleased to partner with KTRB-AM 860 ESPN Deportes,” said Bob Sargent, Director of Broadcasting. “This is a great way to provide 49ers programming, specifically live game coverage, to our Hispanic fan base. This agreement allows us to reach Spanish language audiences like never before.”

In 2005, the ESPN Deportes Radio Network opened its doors in Coral Gables as the hub of ESPN Deportes Radio studios. Since that time, the network has continued to grow across the nation, achieving milestones in the Spanish-language radio industry.

“The 49ers are a first class organization and are a high profile addition to our top notch sports line-up,” said Michael Sher, general manager, 860am ESPN Deportes Radio in the Bay Area. “The Hispanic sports fans throughout Northern California are the big winners. Now they can enjoy all the action and excitement the 49ers and the NFL bring to the airwaves.”

How is it possible to reach 14% of the nation's Hispanic population with just 3 AM stations? Maybe ESPN Desportes in toto reaches 14%, but that's not what you're saying. You're saying that just Desportes Media's 3 stations reaches 14%.

Did they sign with the San Francisco 49'ers?
That contract may be null and void when they become the
Santa Clara 49'ers!
Why would the location of their stadium make any difference? The team will still be the San Francisco49ers...if i remember correctly. Only a few people are ticked off that they're moving - and you can blame the City/County of SF as much as the Yorks.

I know from taking my kids over the years to Great America next door to the new stadium- it only takes about a half-hour to get there from the City - maybe an hour in heavy traffic.

I think it's a boon to SF to get rid of the 49ers because SF hasn't lost anything, but gained in that they don't have to re-do Candlestick and they don't have to pay overtime to all the cops directing traffic, etc. The fans always drove in and out and never spent any money in the neighborhoods.

But look what SF gains -- the radio and TV commentators will still refer to SF even with the team in Santa Clara just as they continue to refer to the NY Jets and the NY Giants, ignoring the fact that both teams play in Rutherford, NJ.

The live camera shots will still show the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate and various SF landmarks. I doubt they'd show much of anything down Santa Clara way except maybe the merry-go-round at Great America. So, SF wins and SC loses.

Is KTRB still operating at severely reduced nighttime power from the daytime site in Hayward? They have at least 5 regular season games that will be hard to hear after sundown if they're not back up to 50 kW. Remember, they told the FCC that their nighttime sight was in such a state of disrepair, and would cost too much to fix and operate when they got their STA for the night@day. Have they fixed it? Is it on the air now? When it went off it was operating at reduced power. Is it back at 50 kW? I could turn on the radio, I suppose, but I don't want to miss my CW reruns.

This May the FCC granted a 6 month extension to the existing STA. The estimate was that they would be back up an running at their remote nighttime site within 3 to 6 months. The current authorized nighttime power at the daytime site is 5 KW according to the STA extension document. The power was reduced from 12.5 KW because of interference complaints. I only know what I see in the FCC database. I have no firsthand information. The coverage from the nighttime site was never that good even when they were running 50 KW. If they want to provide decent nighttime coverage, they need a better solution. 5 KW from Hayward may be as good as it gets right now.

Is 5 kW from Hayward better or worse than 50 kW from the nighttime? In S. San Jose they suck at night, and I think the night site sounded about the same. Is there a chance they might just stay 5 kW from Hayward, and give up the nighttime site?

My gut tells me that they will push this as far as they can. It is a lot easier and cheaper to run from Hayward at night. But, like I say, there has to be a better solution that running from the Sunol nighttime site or running 5 KW from Hayward. It would take money and resolve to make something happen. With the station in receivership, I'm not sure about the money and resolve.
