5.1 Surround sound

Yes, but practically speaking, there's even less of a market for that feature than there is for HD Radio in general.

Something analog FM cant do unless using matrix like Pro-Logic 2 or DTS Neo-6. And then FM stereo system would have problems with it. TV and DVD/Blu-Ray have 5.1

Has there even been any 5.1 demonstrations yet using HD?

The only use I could see for it would be some type of concert performance, maybe for a public radio station's classical or opera shows. But then that would require re-purposing the subchannels for the bandwidth, which would be an issue.

Zach I remember a vehicle running 5.1 at a Las Vegas NAB maybe 15 years ago. I also recall Frank Foti talking about it (I think seeking interest in comments) at a San Diego Radio show a couple of years after that. Since it hasn't been brought out, there is obviously no interest in it or the technical problems can't be overcome.

Should be, most cars have 6speakers. Most home receivers are now 5.1 or 7.1 channels. Many Music DVDs and Blu_ray are 5.1 channels

What should be? Anyway, I thought WZLX was or was going to do 5.1 surround sound.

In fun news, it's possible to do SQ Quadraphonic sound on A.M. stereo!

I've heard of it (quad on AM stereo). Kinda neat. KCJJ in Iowa City has a music show on Saturdays called the Robb Spewak show and he did an entire four hour episode of nothing but quad recordings. I didn't hear it off the station but I did hear the download mp3 version and it was very unusual.

The way I understand it is the SQ Matrix system is close enough to C-QuAM that if you hook your SQ decoder up to an A.M. stereo station that's airing quad, the decoder will decode it. I'll have to check out KCJJ but heard of KBPS doing it.

I don't know how this was passed through or encoded on KCJJ's end or the show's end. It may have been a different system. To decode, you had to run the radio output through a Dolby Pro Logic II receiver. It output channels that way.

Except for a few Acuras with high-end audio systems that can play DVD-Audio discs, those six speakers are still only reproducing two channels. Unfortunately, even with a Beatles release in DVD-Audio-5.1, the surround formats have essentially died off...no demand for them for audio only.

I'm not sure surround of any kind is appropriate for a car environment, anyway. Even with movies on DVD for the kiddies in back, the sound effects of, say, a police car roaring up behind you could lead to some unnecessary panic. Or a sudden blast of gunfire in an action movie.

Quad was just a novelty, I never really 'got' the immersion of being surrounded by music when I only have two ears. Even at a live concert, everyone is playing in front of the listener, not all around them.
