5.3 in DFW (NBC Universal Sports) is gone

I thought the threat was that some cable or satellite providers would be losing this channel on Jan. 1. Apparently us OTA's have lost it, too. KXAS, if we can't have it back, PLEASE give us a fulltime radar/NOAA weatheradio broadcast there instead. All that's on 5.3 now is what's playing on 5.2 (local features and LX--something.)

It was mentioned in passing over on this thread:

Universal Sports is going to cable/satellite delivery only.

I second your opinion, Mike. I hope KXAS still has their old NBC Plus weather equipment in working order and can put that back up. A simulcast of Nonstop is a waste of bandwidth KXAS can ill afford, especially since they also broadcast a mobile/handheld DTV signal. Weather would take less bandwidth (since there's very little motion), yet be more useful to viewers.

Universal Sports also disappeared on Houston's KIAH 39.3. Not replaced by anything yet.

Comcast/Xfinity Channel 319, which had been the slot for 39.3, was blank for a couple of days, then was demapped this morning. Interestingly, Universal Sports has not reappeared elsewhere on Comcast, despite the common ownership.

That's what happens when a cable company (Comcast) that has no interest whatsoever in OTA broadcasting other than to see it shut down and go away so they can charge you for programming, buys controlling interest in a broadcaster.

I agree. Nonstop shouldn't have come to DFW. I don't know anyone who watches that channel. I hope they bring back NBC Plus. At least they had Current Conditions for Decatur unlike WFAA's AccuWeather which only focuses on Denton, Collin, Tarrant and Dallas County cities which gets me ticked off.

KXAS has become a joke. Their flashy graphics can't mask the lack of professionalism on the part of their on-air staff (anchors and reporters). Only David Finfrock appears to have any real credibility left, but the longer he stays there the less credible he'll be. I already don't watch KXAS at all.

NBC/Universal bought KXAS years ago, so you really can't blame their current state on Comcast, but the hopes of an expected turnaround in professionalism and credibility haven't materialized. In fact, they've gotten worse from what I could see before I stopped watching.

Universal Sports disappeared when NBC Sports Channel appeared, because the content airing on US was going to go fill NBCSN's time. I agree that, if KXAS is going to do anything with their subchannels, they should bring back weather. In fact, if they wanted to save bandwidth they could dump NS and move WX back to 5.2, and dump 5.3 entirely.

Or, to really snark off Comcast, they could simulcast NBCSN on 5.3. ;D

What?! You don't like "Talk Stoop"? ;)

So far 2012 has left me nonplussed. :( Universal Sports is gone, MTV Tr3s is gone, any hopes for a quick arrival of Me-TV have been dashed (KTXD has new logos but is still showing mostly the same religious programming & infomercials as before), and Diicon on 30.8 apparently fell through. (That's no surprise, but still...)

And yet NBC expects all five Universal Sports viewers to flood their cable operators with phone calls demanding they carry US as a basic cable network. ::)

I'm still waiting for E! to sue NBC for the "trademark confusion" over that name... :-X

Got an email notice yesterday that the once free OTA Universal Sports is now part of Dish network's Sports Package. So if you really want it badly enough... ;D

It happened at all of the stations which carried it. We used to get it here in Hartford/New Haven on WVIT-TV 30-3. WVIT-TV is an NBC O&O, just like KXAS-TV is.

Basically I think Comcast didn't want to offer a sports network for free while also asking for a fee for the NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus)
