Tomorrow 3/16 at 5PM will mark the 5th Anniversary of HOT 93-7. It was a Friday. And they're still calling themselves "The All New Hot 93-7".
JD and Nancy were held over from the previous Dancin' Oldies format were retained after the format flip.
I remember listening to their show that Monday a woman called in saying she had dropped her car off at the garage to be repaired before she went to work on Friday and when she picked it up after 5PM and heard rap music she went back to the mechanic and said What did you do to my radio?
Prior to 93.7 flipping to hip-hop the only place to here Urban Music full-time were on two AM stations - JAMZ 910 and BLAZE 990. JAMZ 910 was mainly R&B and slow jams. Occasionally they'd play a rap song or two. BLAZE 990 mixed it up quite a bit. They'd play rap, r&b, old skool, and caribbean music. And most of the time they'd play a liner about the type of music they would play next. (Example they'd play a couple r&b songs then there would be a liner "Here comes more R&B. BLAZE 990" and then they'd play a few more r&b songs).
JAMZ 910 flipped to Spanish in May 2001. Blaze 990 still played urban music 6 days a week until September. New management of the station cut the music on Saturdays and replaced it with College Football Games from Westwood One. The station began it's official death march the week of Thanksgiving and completely died in December.
