5000$ in 1982...

Sorry for the off-the-topic... For the price of 5000$ what could be bought in 1982? (For example, a car?..) I want to do an "exercise" regarding the vintage gear I own and the price of it at the time...

Considering that our US dollar has no standard value, I suggest you compare the price of unregulated energy... gas, coal, etc.

Don't know about 1982, but in 1984 you could buy a truckload of stolen Lucky Strike cigarettes from Mr. Axel Foley for (read my lips) FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS :)

In practical terms, you might want to look at the eBay market or eHam market to see what the gear is going for nowadays.

But thanks to Moore's Law, you can't compare prices on features or functions.

Not sure about '82 but in '86 I bought a new Z28 Chevy Camaro, fully loaded, (305ci engine with tuned port fuel injection, t-tops, leather seats, etc) for about $14k. That's the only car I ever bought new. It would probably have been $12k in '82. A similar new car today would be between $25k and $30k, however, features are more deluxe and sophisticated in almost all newer cars as compared to their ancient ancestors. For example, standard cars of the day had manually set mirrors where you opened the window and pushed on the mirror to set it. The Camaro had mirrors that could be adjusted using a little "joystick" mechanical linkage from inside the car without opening the window. Today, mirrors are commonly motorized with controls easily reached from the driver's seat. Very few cars had power seats in the '80s, but they're pretty common today.

Also, in 1984, I bought some loss-leader 19" color TVs as Christmas presents for $219. The going rate for name brand 19" sets was about $300+ and the salesmen tried hard to talk me into the more expensive sets, even going so far as to pre-adjust the image controls on the cheap sets to make them look bad. Today, you would get a sharp looking 32" digital set for the same $300 (or less), so while the cost of food and other comodities has risen with monetary inflation, technology has gotten cheaper.

I'm thinking that 30 years ago (82) 5 grand would buy a photo opportunity with President Reagan; however, today's president isn't that accessible. :p

In the early-mid 90's my dad bought a 30 megabyte hard drive for $600... Yes, MEGAbyte.

Well, If I hadn't bought it was to be sold to the scrapper... perhaps for the same price I got it...
I estimate having about (1982)6000$+(1985)3600$ of gear... What for? To play with ;D

If you're talking about your broadcast related gear if you can locate the older manufacturer's catalogs some of them had price lists. That would give you some idea.

Here is a short list of how much these items cost in the U.S. in 1982 (Googled):

Average Cost of new house $82,200
Median Price Of an Existing Home $67,800
Average Income per year $21,050.00
Average Monthly Rent $320.00
Cost of a gallon of Gas 91 cents
New Car Average price $7,983.00
US Postage Stamp 20 cents
Vic 20 $299.95
Satellite Receiver $245.95
