50kW WEEI 850 AM Boston off-air right now

50 kW WEEI 850 AM Boston, which is nulled inland at night but carpetbombs greater Boston from a site 12 miles west-southwest of the city and covers northeastern New England and the coastline at night, is off the air right now for some reason.

I'm now getting just a soupy low-level mud of a handful of stations on top of one another on 850 here near Boston, mostly unintelligible. There's something that sounds like it may be foreign (Spanish?) soft AC or perhaps religious music, and at least a few stations running talk or sports-talk programming. I picked out "The Jody Reynolds show" on one of them.

A few of the stations ran CNN news at the hour, but as soon as they broke away at the end and went to separate programming, they were battling each other again and could not be heard intelligibly above one another. I couldn't catch any ID's or local content. I can't tell if KOA is making it all the way out here buried in the mud from Denver or not.

From a little googling, I see that WTAR 850 Norfolk, Va. Runs Joey Reynolds 1-5 AM that might be one of the stations you heard,,WNTJ 850 Johnstown, Pa. Has Coast To Coast..WKNR 850 in Cleveland has ESPN overnight Though they run just 4.7 kw at night. You probably heard at least one if not all 3 stations

I might also add that if you heard something in Spanish, it might have been KEYH in Houston. They only run 185 watts at night, and it's beamed due east from a site in far west Houston, but it's possible that you heard it mixed in with the others.

I heard at least one ID that ended in "R", though I couldn't catch the other letters or locations. I think all three of those stations and more were in the mix that I heard.

The Spanish station on 850 in the DFW area is on the air, and with 5kW, they go quite a ways. I can hear them in Lubbock, TX when I am out there, obliterating KOA. They are noting more than a repeater of the Spanish station on 870 in Ft. Worth. Given that it is probably unmanned, there is a lot of potential for them to stay on daytime power at night.
