540 from where

Yesterday (10/12/11) about 0530-0550 CDT (1030-1050 UTC), I heard what sounded like a broadcast from Australia or New Zealand on 540 KHz.

I heard an in-depth news program, but no (other than the accent) indication of where it was coming from. There was news from the Pacific region in with news from other parts of the world.

I checked Radio Australia on 9580/9590 & no match.

I was using an old Panasonic RF-799 with the built-in antenna aimed WNW/ESE (from Lake Geneva, WI) to null out Jackson, WI's WAUK. This was about an hour before local sunrise.

Anyone have any idea what I may have heard?

I had to leave for work & tried the car radio, but there was too much WAUK. Probably from the car's non-directional antenna.

My guess is you heard CBK from Watrous (near Regina), Saskatchewan. They are 50,000 watts and widely heard with CBC news broadcasts.

Overnights, CBC Radio One carries news feeds from overseas radio organizations....so ^ CBK, I 'd say.

I caught CBK from Florida in the 1970s, but I don't even try anymore.
