540 WORSE THAN EVER

So 540 is finally carrying Jim Rome, which they only announced 6 MONTHS AGO. I like Rome, I realize I might be the only guy in Pittsburgh who does, but I've lived a bunch of different places and traveled constantly for work, so I like national shows.

They are making no effort to fill the local breaks, so you hear the filler music every break. Except, of course, at :58 where the network goes silent until the top of the hour.... then they switch back to the main Fox Sports feed for two minutes of the network show, then back to Rome at the top of the hour.

And the signal is challenged as close by as West Mifflin. Sort of this weird electrical pulsing. Makes the station pretty much unlistenable if you're more than 15 minutes or so from Southpointe.

What a waste.

Was not much different when Fox Sports was on 970.
I would frequently hear dead-air and a loop of that Fox Sports theme music
covering for unsold spots.

From where exactly is this station being controlled now anyway?
I know as Radio Disney everything was on Ardmore Blvd.

I think the answer for the signal issue is that to save money, he is running it at the 500 watt nighttime power. The signal issues line up almost exactly with their night coverage map.

That must be an awfully tight budget.

Let's say that to generate the 5000 Watt signal takes 10kW input power, and it's at the higher power level for 15 hours per day. In one day, then, it would take 150kWH to run at the higher power.

I don't know what the commercial rate for power is, but residential is about 10c per kWH in WPa. For arguments sake, let's assume 15c/kWH for WWCS. So one 15-hour day at 5kW (instead of at 500W) would cost 150kWH/day times 15c/kWH = $22.50 additional per day. Or less than $700/month.

I've guessed at a lot of the factors above; feel free to substitute more realistic ones.

That calculation reminds me of the famous Jeff Christie crank-call on WIXZ where
he called Duquesne Light and made them crunch the numbers on the cost of growing palm trees
in his back yard.

Way more than running a 5kW transmitter apparently.

540 doesn't bother me.

What bothers me is 1550, which has a marketable and listenable morning show with Imus in the Morning. But whenever I try to tune in, it's usually a good bet the station isn't on the air or they haven't turned the station's power up yet.

Trying to call the station usually doesn't work, either.

Ever been to Fenton?

Take a walk in the woods there and you could easily sink in the muck up to your mid-calf.
The fence may be redundant.
