55 wkrc radio is Boring Radio

WKRC Radio is a boring radio station. Brian Thomas is O-K but he not his dad Jerry Thomas.
The network shows are boring with the same talk themes said over and over.

There are those who would love Mike McConnell to return to WLW and replace Scott Sloan. I am not Sloan's number one fan but his energy would be a plus on 55 WKRC. Clear Channel doesn't want WKRC to compete against WLW and they want to run the station cheap. Where the ratings are going nowhere and it is a boring radio station.

Question - put yourself in a position to change formats or make changes to the current format. What would you do?
I touched on this before but now that Russ and Sean are on top of the world in talk radio then some things need to be looked at. There is a proud history for this station and something needs to be done.
 
Boring is what their audience wants. 55KRC is what the old WCKY Newstalk 1530 was back in the 80's and 90's minus the local shows. It just their listeners are older now. I doubt they will change anything until the day comes when they have no audience.
 
"Old" people are the ones who listen to AM radio. Why then, is not a good idea to program WKRC for old people?

Boring to one person is entertainment to another person. Since WKRC shows are not liberal, I can see how one who is liberal would find the programming boring.

Politics is a boring subject in general.

I agree that Brian is not his father.

Sports is boring, except when the subject is a team you follow.

FM is a vast wasteland, especially on the "public" side of the dial. How many local sources do we need for NPR and PRI and the other nationally distributed "free" programs? I'm thinking only one. Cincinnati has multiple signals.

WNOP offers an entertaining local alternative to the AM/FM morning garbage. Yes, you probably have to be Catholic to appreciate it.

I'd probably switch it to '80s-based oldies that doesn't just repeat the same songs over and over.
 
Music on AM won't be profitable sorry to say. As much as I would like an alternative to WLW, I doubt CC will compete with itself in any other talk format besides 2nd tier conservative talk for the time being. They could always sell off some of their AM's in the future in order to pay down their massive debt in a few years though but they may be stuck with declining audiences and station values if they wait to long to do that. That is already happening on AM especially with the syndicated Conservative talk NIMBY format which is their mainstay.
 
You people are missing the point. The ONLY reason KRC exists in it's current form is to platoon and protect WLW. Period. They don't care if it makes money or not, they don't care if you think it's boring or not. It's sole position is to be a flanker for 700. Nothing more, nothing less. And as long as CC owns it, that's ALL it will ever be.
 
When you consider what WKRC Radio once had (Matlock, Thomas, Jones, McKay, Don Webb with the news, the Reds and UC football & basketball) you can certainly see how things at 550 are different.
 
The station no doubt needs a breath of life blown into it but as Bengalsfan points out CC will continue to use it to protect The Big One. I am not sure I agree with the comment that they don't care if it makes money. CC is all about making money with the fewest employees as possible.
 
WKRC exists to both protect WLW and to clear all the Premiere/Clear Channel shows that WLW doesn't want to run. So WKRC gets Rush, Beck, Hannity, Coast to Coast, etc. while WLW has all local programming and keeps its always-#1 ratings, a rare achievement in this day of mostly FM listening.

Is it boring? To us it is, the non-stop Obama and Democrat bashing is silly. No matter what happens, health care, protests in Egypt, economy up, economy down, Obama and the Democrats are always wrong, Republicans are always right. But nobody's figured out a better way to get decent ratings on an AM station.
 
Last I checked, 55KRC was beating the tax dollar funded WVXU quite nicely---they will do even better as the election cycle nears--- we are very lucky to have a couple of viable AM talkers--- and my roast chicken would suffer without Marilyn--

No offense, but WVXU probably has a younger audience who know how to use Google to search for Chicken recopies I'm betting.
 
Not sure about that Mr Micro. Diane Rheim (sp?) Sounds to be in her mid 100s and the news guy with slippery teeth even older. Car Talk guys and the tom bodett sound-a-like are all well beyond retirement age.

I want my chicken from a human not food.com and I look forward to Bruce's latest creation...

I like the NPR talk product (though I do miss Talk of the Nation). I don't like paying for it out if taxes. Compete in the open market or go away.

As for 55KRC changes. I speak as a life long fan.. Not a radio guy. I miss Denny, the geeks, and Steve. Some of the Sunday afternoon shows are unlistenable. More Savage. Less Ramsey. Brian is great syndication is fine. Someone needs to proof the weather and news. It is often out of date.

Marty, you nailed it! I agree with every point. Geek Talk with Doug and Dave was a great show, and the rest of the weekend shows were better. Ramsey is the same every day. I miss Real Talk 1160, and find myself listening to Levin or Covino & Rich on Sirius evenings. Savage and Levin need an outlet in Cincinnati.

I do like Dale Donovan and Brian. Andy Dean on WHIO is also pretty good, I just can't hear it evenings in Cincinnati for the drive home. WHIO should be on WHKO's HD-3, not the ultra low bitrate repeat of The Eagle.

If McConnell doesn't return home to The Big One, I'd love to see him on FM Talk with Levin, Savage, Miller, Red Eye Radio, and at least one more strong local show. Maybe Jeff Katz?? His month on WCKY made a lasting impression with me, and I made a point to listen to him later on WIBC. Maybe Merlin will buy 105.9 and shake things up a little. Bring John Phillips home, too! Leave sports off of it.

If Ramsey is such a money maker, put Ramsey and Clark Howard on 1360.

Diane Rehm suffers from a voice disorder called spasmodic dysphonia...
 
I'm not talking about her spasmodic dysphonia I'm speaking to the fact that she is pushing 80 years old--- Just seems silly to say NPR is hipper than 55KRC-- unless you consider liberal bias hip and conservative bias boring
 
Not specifically related to WKRC, but I was listening to Hugh Hewitt a few weeks ago. Granted, he's not the most exciting guy to listen to and I'm generally not a fan of conservative talk with a hard Judeo-Christian slant.

He interviewed author Dan Balz. I believe for the whole show. It was a great and mostly well thought out interview. Occasionally Hewitt would try to put words in Balz mouth but Balz was on his game enough to swat it down without getting combative. Actually neither side of the microphone was combative. The discussion centered on Balz book about the 2012 election. It actually was quite interesting. And again, I'm not a Hewitt fan. But I really enjoyed hearing bits and pieces of the show as I ran errands that night.

I guess my point is that is more what I'm looking for from talk radio. Not talking points. Not conservatives good, liberals bad. But interesting talk. Presented in a thoughtful manner.
