55 wkrc radio is Boring Radio

Bring back real traffic reports - not chair-bourne and from Cleveland (minus Bruce and Chuck in Kenwood). John in the chopper gave you true reports. CC automated it - I hear the sales force is next. Time to watch the KRP episode where Venus is watching over the computer. Yes - the taped news/weather lacks credibility, especially when storms are around and news is outdated by the afternoon.

Are you aware that it costs upward of $150 an hour (and more) for planes and helicopters these days?

I didn't think so.

Why do you think most TV stations are beginning to abandon "choppers"? At 4 to 6 hours a day, that's about $1,000 a day. And no...stations don't make that with those little 15 second spots inside traffic reports.

Wait for drones. That's when it might become more affordable. And traffic drones are being tested now...

With all the traffic cameras available on the web and the ability for callers to phone in incidents, why would anyone want to put up a helicopter, fixed wing plane or a drone? As far as KRC, they have a great signal and it is totally wasted. Even a totally conservative friend of mine, who listens to 4 to 6 hours of conservative talk each day has said that he is cutting back because they all say exactly the same thing, over and over again. Considering the horrible fidelity and impulse noise on AM, I'm going to say that they need to thin the herd, get rid of the local channels (I'm talking to you 1230 et. al.) and save the potentially viable talk formats for the best facilities. That would be news, talk and sports. That's it.

Airborne traffic was never intended to pay for itself. Reds and Bengals games ads don't cover the rights fees either. The profit comes from just HAVING the games/traffic image...not selling the ads. That image, supported by a copter and personality, added to the overall "worth" of the station. Adjacencies to traffic reports in Jim Scott's show were the most expensive ads you could buy outside Bengals or Reds. It contributed to the "When you need to know" and "Miss a day - miss a lot" that's missing today.

The cameras are fine for the expressways...not so much for whatever is wrong on Glenway near Glenmore. With John in the copter, you had play-by-play and color. Today's reports are play-by-play for 10% of the field...the expressways...and none of the color of chasing bad guys, fires, idiots, etc.

The hourly cost of a copter today is closer to $400, not $150. Insurance went crazy after 9-11. It almost doubled. Add the increase in gas to that and that's why they stopped using them as much as anything.

Sorry Jason, I've been around for a few years so I know costs. Arbitorn is dead on - It was costing 400-500 an hour but, put in the PR, the built in promotion of the various stations (yes, the copter had logos), personal appearances, etc, it made sense to have one. Cross-use with a television station (ie B-105/WLWT, WLW/WKRC-TV) and it made and still makes sense. My 2 cents. Marty - I agree. Overbeck and the others missing from the lineup helped make the station listenable on the weekends. And gotta have Marilyn and the turkey rescuing and 7Up cakes.

Diane Rehm suffers from a voice disorder called spasmodic dysphonia...

It's painful to listen. When Andy Mac had it, he and WLW had the good sense to call it a day. If an umpire has major eye problems, he stops calling the game. When an announcer has major voice problems, it's time to do something else.
