56 to Surprise us on Monday with new Chief Meteorologist

KETK has just run an ad saying that they will reveal their new chief meterologist on Monday....and that he has two decades of experience in the top ten television markets in the United States.

Any speculation on who it is?

It's none other then Scott Chesner...It's obvious in the promos. The guys shape and face give it away.

Scott, of course, worked for 23 years at KXAS NBC 5 in Dallas. Harold Taft hired him in 1981. In 2004, the management either fired him or "didn't renew his contract" which forced him out. He then moved to KTEN in Sherman-Denison to do mornings and midday and recently midday and 5pm. KTEN even announces that in its job postings.

What I think is hilarious about this promo is the fact that KETK is hyping the whole "he's worked in a top ten market". No at home viewer is even going to understand that. That's a slam towards 19 and 7.

East Texas viewers will have no idea who Scott is, seeing as they haven't had KXAS on cable since the late 80s when KETK first went on.

Theres been alot of back and forth on scotts "dismissal" from NBC5. Most indicate it had to with three things:

A)Personal issues outside of work

B)Poor performance with its then radio partner WBAP 820

C) "Managment" brought in Steve McLaughlin as their weekend weather guy.

He isnt a bad weather guy, just had his time here and was ursurped by David Finfrock

I remember Scott Chesner...

...and I think it's great that he's worked in a Top 10 market.

BUT...

what matters to me (at least) is not whether he's worked in a "top 10 market". It's that he's at least familiar enough with the lay of the land to not stand there on-camera with his mouth hanging at his ankles saying, "Wow, I've never seen that happen before."

I think that his knowledge of Texas weather makes him a great fit for the position. Plus, he's already got a familiar face in Neal Barton on staff there. And, it will be a bit nostalgic because I remember as a kid watching him alongside the legendary late Harold Taft on KXAS.

BTW....KTEN has removed any trace of mention of him from their website. I googled his name and found kten.com pages with his name on them, but all except one had been disabled.
______________

> CH.5 KXAS didn't renew his contract due to allegations of spousal abuse which he was arrested for, and bailed out of jail late at night by management. The other was his slack approach to providing weather to WBAP for the Trucking network. He had to do tan average of 21 takes before he sent it,and it was often one min before airtime. ON the IFB he was heard talking to his gf instead of getting it sent ontime, thus WBAP broke off its long association with KXAS and went with WFAA.

The KETK news anchor whom Neal Barton succeeded< Kevin Steele, departed 56 in the wake of his arrest supposedly stemming also from a spousal abuse incident. Hope a pattern isn't developing here, if such charges were indeed part of the reason for Chesner's exit from Channel 5.

I wonder if its a prerequisite that have a AMS and a spousal abuse charge to work there. What a coincidence.

Uhhh...no. Steele has been the only one, IIRC, that has been in hot water at 56 and has been public.
______________
