560 The Joe

Entercom making some big moves....moving staff from WQAM to WAXY and moving ESPN to WQAM and rebranding it "The Joe"....thus proving they are addicted to branding their stations "The Something"...

Case in point....The Beach, The Ticket, The Shark, The Ticket, The Joe.....when will it be The Lite and The Kiss? ?

Also they made a ton of lineup changes and several people were obviously laid off....but I'll let someone else post that information from the news story because I don't do news anymore.....

I thought the name was a strange joke by Barry Jackson since he only mentioned it in passing in his column. Either way I guess they needed to do something to help set it apart from the other sports stations in town, one of which they already own.

How about The Donald for a right-wing talker?

Also, isn't "The Joe" what locals call Joe Robbie Stadium, home of the Dolphins? The name makes sense on a Miami sports station.

How about calling it...WQAM! It's been WQAM for almost 100 years now. Anyone who cares knows it as WQAM and there is only one WQAM. Joe=stupid. I didn't even get the connection until you mentioned it.

Because conventional wisdom has it that only geezers and radio geeks care about call letters anymore. Also, heavily Hispanic Miami has plenty of folks in its environs who are used to stations called El this and La that that hardly ever mention their call letters, so this sort of labeling is a good way to get the station to stick in the subconscious.

With a name like that, the only place it's gonna stick is in my craw.

I put 560 on this morning and the station hasn't sounded that good from an audio standpoint in a long time. The signal was nice and strong near Boynton Beach Blvd. and it sounds like they've turned down the VoltAir as well thereby losing a lot of that bathroom-like reverb you hear on 105.9 and WINZ.

Ouch I can check both boxes radio geek (yep) and geezer (check). I never cared much for conventional wisdom!

The Joe still sounds dumb, bet it doesn't last. Homer would be better!

This could still end up being a money making proposition for Entercom. They have local shows plus the Heat on 790 and mostly syndicated (free) shows along with the Dolphins, 'Canes and Panthers on 560. With the right sales approach they might do pretty well.
