590 KLBJ off the air mid morning

I was driving to a Sales Call in San Antonio this morning and noticed KLBJ AM was off the air. In its place was XEFD from I believe Rio Bravo. The signal was weak, but somewhat listenable.

On the flip side, when I was in McAllen and XEFD was off the air, KLBJ had a much stronger signal in the Valley than XEFD had in San Antonio.

That somewhat surprised me unless the ground conductivity of the Valley and San Antonio played a role.

Interesting report. Thanks for sharing! Always wondered how far one would go without the other in the way, and I swear I remember reading a few years ago that KLBJ was heard pretty well throughout South Texas in XEFD's absence. That might very well have been your report!
Where I lived in League City several years ago, XEFD was dominant on 590 but where I worked in west Houston, KLBJ was louder. And I swear I also remember reading one time that XEFD has been heard under KLBJ as close as southern Comal County. For that reason alone, I thought XEFD might be stronger around San Antonio.

Since I was in an area of north San Antonio with a lot of power lines and other interference, that might have been the culprit. I still expected a more robust signal from XEFD. I was hoping to hear their signal in Canyon Lake, but KLBJ had returned during my meeting.

Both the “XEFD free” McAllen report and the Southern Comal County circa 2006 were my reports.

Merry Christmas from the chilly Texas Hill Country.

Merry Christmas from chilly NW San Antonio!

Here I’m able to null KLBJ pretty well by aiming NW/SE. That allows me to hear XEFD. It’s just a flutter except on my most sensitive radios, on which it’s weak but readable.
