590 KLBJ without XEFD

Here in South Texas, 590 KLBJ and XEFD in the Matamoras area duke it out through many miles of South Texas. This morning XEFD is off the air and KLBJ is putting a decent signal into the McAllen area here in Deep South Texas; road miles that is well over 300 miles (more like 350). Not sure if XEFD is off the air temporarily or if it has migrated to FM.

Over here in Houston, KLBJ is usually on top, but is easily nullable (is that a word?) and XEFD is always there with a good signal. As I recall, as you drive toward the coast, XEFD would become the dominant one. However, as of this writing (Wednesday 12:40pm), no sign of XEFD. Their website appears to be blank, with the logo on top and generic news for all the La Mejor's below. Their listen live button is not functioning either. Maybe they are gone.

I remember the dogfight I was hearing between XEFD and KLBJ the last time I was passing through the Houston area. Reminded me of the dogfight between WAFC and R. Nacional (Cuba) in South Florida. Also 590. Also daytime.

This was one of the more intriguing/entertaining co-channel battles I've ever heard (coincidentally, one of the others is in that same region on 1010 between KLAT/Houston and KBBW/Waco). Heard it many times when I lived in the Houston area and traveled to the west, toward San Antonio and San Marcos. It does not surprise me at all that KLBJ can be heard all the way down to the border without XEFD there.
I have read reports over the years that XEFD could be heard under KLBJ within 60 miles of Austin; not sure how far south you'd have to go to hear XEFD completely own the channel. On the occasion that I was near the Gulf and checked 590, XEFD owned with no sign of KLBJ.

Regular poster Raymie may have more data, but I believe that XEFB migrated to FM along with over 2/3 of all Mexican AM commercial stations. But then, when the channel came up for re licensing, they applied to have the AM as well as a new concession. What I do not know is whether the AM is active yet, or perhaps the new license is for lower power.

A further mystery is that the December Mexican "official list" shows an AM in "Piedras Negras" on 580, but not 590.

XEFD was back on today. I was in Corpus Christi and KLBJ and XEFD were battling it out. In Corpus, XEFD is on top, but you can hear KLBJ underneath. KLBJ begins to emerge around Three Rivers, Texas (roughly halfway between San Antonio and Corpus Christi). Going south on 281, XEFD is pretty much unchallenged by the time you reach Alice (150 miles or so from Rio Bravo).

Interesting. I've tried a couple of times in the daytime over the weekend and KLBJ is totally on top. There's a very weak signal in KLBJ's null, but nothing like the typical XEFD. Maybe they're having transmitter issues?
