6/11-12 tropo

nd2023

Banned
A tropo opening worth staying up for, ranks in my top 5 just because of how unique it is. On the morning of June 11, there was e-skip and when the e-skip faded, I got my usual tropo from Long Island (in the middle of the day). The tropo stayed all day. After the sun set, the FM band came alive with stations from Cape Cod. The tropo expanded to Boston and Worcester, interfering with the local stations. Then the duct expanded the other way bringing in a few stations from Delaware, Maryland, and DC. Then it brought in stations past Boston, in New Hampshire, including a few new logs (WZID, WBOQ, WFNQ). At times, the tropo was strong enough to allow for HD reception on some stations. WHOM hasn't come in this strongly since 2005. My usual stations from Virginia Beach and NC were absent tonight, probably because there's a back-door cold front just south of DC. The weather was cloudy and 77 degrees with a southeast wind all day, the same weather as was on May 30 that brought in the Boston stations at high noon and Richmond stations at night.

On the TV side of the band, I wound up with watchable HD video in Freehold, NJ from WVIT (UHF35/PSIP30, New Britain, CT) and WLNY (UHF57/PSIP55, Riverhead, NY) so yeah - strong tropo!

Had a little mini-opening around 10 AM Monday. Mostly Eastern Shore stuff coming into Central VA. Not much else though. Lasted around 2 hours.

For some odd reason I always get most of the Baltimore/Delaware stations at the Shark River Inlet (Headliner parking lot)

Sometimes every weekend (Saturdays). Always that little area 92Q knocks out Now, I pick up Kiss FM 105.5 (WDKZ), OC 104 (103.9), and 97.1 The Wave knocks out Hot 97.

Man, the stations are really coming in here in South Jersey. Driving down the Parkway in to Ocean City at rush hour, and BAM!

96.5 - Mix 96 - KRAV Tulsa, OK
101.9 - The Twister - KTST Oklahoma City, OK
103.3 - Star 103 - KJSR Tulsa, OK
104.1 - News Talk KSGF Springfield, MO

More tropo tonight... all the major shore area NJ FMs are audible in northern Somerset County, some very loud and clear: 95.1 WAYV, 96.9 WFPG, 97.3 WENJ (ex-WBSS), 98.5 WBBO, 100.1 WJRZ-FM, 104.9 WSJO, 105.7 WCHR-FM, and 107.3 WPUR.

Also Z-100 and WCBS-FM is getting torn up by Philly's WRNB and WBEB, respectively, in central NJ areas where they are normally strong.

I had some great catches this morning while driving from Northern Bergen County into Southern Rockland.....Mostly all were from AC on South & OC Maryland but these stood out the most:

93.5 WZBH - 1st Time Catch mixing with local WVIP
94.3 WIBG-FM - 1st Time Catch mixing with WJLK
95.9 WKZP - 1st Time Catch mixing with WRAT/WFOX
99.9 WWFG - Completely took out WEZN
100.7 WZXL - In most areas (even Rockland) I was getting WZXL with RDS & WHUD is only 20 miles away.
101.7 WZEB - 1st Time Catch
102.3 WAIV - 1st Time Catch
103.7 WMGM - 1st Time I've got it as a local (and RDS)
105.5 WSNQ - 1st Time Catch with lots of static but little mixing with WDHA
106.3 WJSE - 1st Time Catch even with RDS a spots!...Shocked I wasn't getting WKMK instead
