6 ABC anchors Rick Williams and Monica Malpass need to go

I'm not a big fan of the 5 PM team on Channel 6. I don't like their style of presenting the news to us, their not respect to the viewers and they talk too fast. The 2 anchors of Rick Williams and Monica Malpass need to go, I dont' care how their ratings are. I want anchors to do the news the right way not the way it is right now in the newscasts I watch local and national.

Welp, your opinion and youre certainly entitled to it, but I doubt Rick and Monica are going anywhere. I haven't caught them in a while but they've been paired forever and apparrently work well together. Plus, they get the viewers, which is really all that matters in the end. So, for you, youve got KYW at 4, and KYW and WPVI at 6 (dont know your opinion of those anchors). It'll be a bit before you've got a news to watch at 5 (assuming you like FOX 29).

Wow, Julius actually express his opinion on something.
Do pray tell, what you feel is doing "the news the right way" and what local and national newscasts you watch and what is wrong with them.

Reading it normaly without acting, I watch them all and they are all the same, fast talking and poor news anchors . Its really bad.

I, for one, really like Rick Williams, and think he would be a fine replacement for Jim Gardner on the 11:00 newscast once Gardner retires at some point down the line.

When you're an anchor team for...what 12-15 years like they are, you MUST be doing plenty of things right. Monica and Rick are the best anchor tandem in the market, save maybe for Ukee Washington and Pat Ciarrochi at CBS 3.

A replacement I heard brought up before was Rob Jennings. I think 6 would rather go that way than break-up their super team. Opinions?

Julius: you seem to be the only one who has problems with Rick Williams and Monica Malpass. You have brought this up in the past. You claim "their not respect to the viewers." How are they being disrespectful to the viewers (if that's what you're trying to say)? Just by reading the news too fast? That's being disrespectful? Just because they don't do things the way you want doesn't mean it's wrong or disrespectful to the audience. If you feel disrespected, then too bad. Watch Channel 10. Rick and Monica aren't going anywhere anytime soon. I find nothing wrong with this anchor team or how they present the news. They've been doing it this way for years, and it seems that WPVI management feels no reason to change. The anchors aren't "acting," as you claim. As long as I have been in television, I have NEVER heard of news anchors being deemed as "actors" before.

On the Jennings topic, I feel Rob Jennings would be a suitable replacement for Jim Gardner, when and if Jim decides it's time to retire. Both have been with the station for as long as I can remember, and I feel viewers would have no problems with Rob becoming the 11:00 anchor. Well, perhaps only one of us around here will find something wrong with Rob.

I hate channel 6, but Rick Williams and Monica Malpass do a passable job and are just normal news anchors.
Julius really doesn't get specific why and just employs circular logic repeating himself, Reading it normaly without acting, I watch them all and they are all the same, fast talking and poor news anchors . Its really bad.

Can you define this, give examples, compare and contrast, tell us who is a good anchor?

If you are unhappy with all the local newscasts, just don't watch or move somewhere where the anchors make you happy.

Shawn, as much as I like Rob and feel he's a great talent, he shouldn't get the weeknight gig. He'll have the limited shelf life similar to what Charlie Gibson at ABC has. 'PVIs best bet is to move the "super team" of Monica and Rick to 6 and 11 when Jim calls it a career.

God, I remember Monica Malpass from about 10 or 11 years ago when I lived in the area!!

I'm still waiting for Mr. May's explination as to how Rick Williams and Monica Malpass are being disrespectful to the viewers.

"Paging Julius May...Julius May, please report to the Philadelphia TV message board. Thank you." ;)

(No, I'm not picking on Julius either. I'm simply asking that he prove that Mr. Williams and Ms. Malpass are being disrespectful to the television audience.)

I just re-read what Julius said in his intial post..

What is the right way Mr. May? Who made you arbitrary(spelling) decision maker of what's right and wrong?

Frankly, if their numbers are good.. that's what counts. I'd LOVE to hear why you think they should go. if you make a claim, back it up!!

Forget it. I was wrong in starting this thread.

Julius: When you express your opinion, you have to stand by it and argue your point. Giving up and saying forget it is just a cop out and you may as well go back to your "I have no opinion" days. If you feel the anchors should go give your reasons. If you can't accept criticism, you can't run away and wish it never happened.

Nertz, Paul, and Shawn...I'm with you.
I've commented a few times when I think people are being unfair, but this is NOT one of those cases!
The best threads on these boards are the ones where personal opinions drive the discussions. After all, who are we to know the perfect way to run a radio or TV station? If we did have the answers, I bet we'd spend a lot less time here. Our opinions are what this is all about, and I agree, stating how you feel without the reason why is a waste of time.
Sure, people may disagree, but no opinion is "wrong" unless contradicted by facts.
Bring on the opinions, but back them up!
I for one can't stand Rick Williams. I don't care for the tone of his voice, he sounds like he's "reading the news" to me, as opposed to "talking" to me, and I can't stand that damn "head bobbing" for emphasis!

Let's not give 6 too much credit. They can hire a trained chimp to read the news and it would still be number one. Face it, no matter what, 6 rules the day.

I think that Jim Gardner must be an audio animatronic Disney creation. He seems to have no genuine outward emotions.

And thirteen years later, Monica Malpass is gone. Her contract wasn't renewed, there was no love fest and commercials leading up to her last broadcast as there normally are when their long time on air talent retire. Malpass was reportedly not be one off the nicest people either, rumors of a feud with Cecily Tynan, being a pushy "do you know who I am" type diva in public etc. She may have been #1 in her timeslot, but a lot of folks don't miss working with her at all.
