6 Dead, 21 Missing in West Virginia Mine Explosion: Coverage

There is surprisingly little coverage of this breaking, tragic story.

NBC
-Quick blurb at start of Nightly News

CNN
-Regular programming, with occasional breaks

FOX
-Regular programming with occasional breaks

Gosh, If we hadn't mucked up AM so badly, we could all tune to WWVA 1170 and listen to news.
At least the eastrn half the nation.
I wonder if they're covering it.
What I'm hearing on 1170now is NOT news coverage.
This is when AM skywave is of extreme advantage.

Once again, with breaking news, CNN is right there. They led off with the story on Larry King, but quickly switched over to regularly scheduled programming. But, AC360 spent the good part of the first half hour on it. I said it before, but it appears CNN is trying to position themselves as the breaking news network, which is a good idea since their ratings are pathetic. I'm no top level TV executive, but if I were CNN, I would immediately turn their name into "CNN...the Breaking News netwrok". It couldn't hurt at this point.

Of course, this was what CNN was in its infancy -- when it was mostly an all-news channel. CNN was at is best when it was a news channel, not a bunch of talking heads.

1170 AM is owned by Clear Channel (nuff said). That being said 8PM-1AM is GOD SQUAD PROGRAMMING. The rest of the day is the same political talk you hear on every other radio station.

WWVA is on the complete other side of the state from where it happened. WWVA is in Wheeling, while the tragedy happened in Montcoal, four hours south. They are closer to Pittsburgh than where the tragedy is.

I wonder what the Charleston TV stations did with it.

I would like for the TV networks to dispense with the interviews of the teary-eyed friends and family members. It's a tragedy for sure, and there is some slim hope that these guys will come out alive. However, interviewing stressed and grieving relatives does not advance the story much.

It seems like, no matter what the story, our media seems to want to immediatly pull on the heart strings and it's really getting old.
