60 Minutes' Bob Simon dies in cab accident

Thanks for the "60 Minutes" memories, Bob Simon. You will be missed at CBS News! Condolences to his wife and daughter as well as non-immediate family and colleagues of Mr. Simon.

Terrible news; he will be missed. One of the old guard at CBS who carried the torch of top-notch journalism and a reminder of the glory days of CBS News and its army of international correspondents. He had been with the network since 1967.

I watched a montage of his work featured on today's CBS This Morning.

It's really incredible what a tremendous journalist he was. I saw clips from some of his most memorable recent pieces, on Detroit, the orchestra in Africa, Chernobyl, and polar bears in the Antarctic. And those were stories that have run in the last couple of years. He'd been putting out quality pieces for decades.

Sadly, when he transitioned from a regular CBS reporter to 60 Minutes correspondent, it was on 60 Minutes II. That show was not very good and had poor ratings, but Scott Pelley and Bob Simon were the bright spots. Despite the quality of his work, Bob only occasionally cracked the line-up of Ed, Lesley, Steve, Morely and Mike onto the main 60 Minutes program. But when he did, I always thought "Who is the Bob Simon guy and why isn't he on more often?" He finally became a full time 60 Minutes correspondent in 2005...
