Word has it that the Spring book in Rochester has Bro Wease tied for 6th 25-54 (the money demo according to the D&C). WCMF is 4th with Buzz #1, WHAM #2 and WBEE #3 in mornings. How long before the Cheap Channel folks realize their mistake and push Bob N Tom from over nights into AM drive? After all, nobody live on Drive or Kiss anymore, right? How long til the GM who decided to bid big on Wease gets the hook? Or was it even his decision, and not somebody higher up. Can't make that kind of dough from #6.

Bob & Tom? Get serious. They own Indy, but Rochester ain't Indy. Wease in 6th, Persons 25-54 isn't great, but everybody knows his act is Men 25-54 and these days, Men 35-64; break out those numbers and it's quite likely he'll show better than 6th. I was one of the naysayers when CC laid out the cash for Wease and I'm still not sold, but let's try to be objective. I'd bet Wease is doing much better in male demos. Is it worth the cake he's taking home? I dunno. But WCMF isn't exactly tarin' it up 12+, so maybe it's addition by subtraction.

Tell you what, man... that little stand alone WDKX really has it goin' on. Now THAT looks like the story in Rochester.

I noticed that Legends dropped slightly in the Spring book.

Considering what happened in the last book, when the station went from a 2 to a 4 share (12+) Crawford decided to fire a slew of people including the GM.

So factoring in that Bizzaro mentality, does this mean that because the station lost some listeners Crawford will add more staff ? ::)

Easy now! Legends 12+ share only dropped .3 from the last book and still remains in contention while CMF & THE FOX continue to fall off considerably. And what's up with THE BEE? Folks, Legends future continues to be brighter while also rans like The Drive, Fickle and The Zone continue to wallow in mediocraty.

Don't take offense. I was only pointing out the truth; which is during the last book Legends rewarded staff and management for their hard work by showing a lot of people the front door.

I'm sure Legends audience will grow, especially when it goes up against "jukeboxes" like Fickle and similar non-personality stations.

In a perfect world it would be great if the media-monsters (Clear Channel and Entercom) sold some of these low-performing stations to people who actually understand broadcasting, thus allowing them to offer listeners something different than what is currently going over the airwaves. But this isn't a perfect world and I'm sure that those "media-monsters" would rather pour money down a drain than sell those stations, thus risking the possibility of having some competition to deal with.

The cutbacks at Legends are part of an industry-wide trend taking place because of the soft economy. Yes, the timing of these cuts were curious, given the success in the winter book, but those cuts would have happened regardless of where we stood in the book. You'll notice that, aside from losing the Saturday night oldies guy, there were ZERO cuts to the on-air staff

I'm just damn happy to be where I am with everything going on right now. As Element noted, we seem to be doing quite alright for a stand-alone.

WDKX is basically what WBBF was in 1968 and WAXC was in 1973. It's the station that pulls together 12-34 listeners across ethnic and urban/suburban lines and owns the young demos, because it's personality-driven, local, full-service, and plays all the hits in a way that crosses demographic borders. After those old AM top 40 powerhouses faded in the late 70s there really hadn't been another such station in the market with mass-appeal reach for younger audiences...until now. Within the reach of their signal WDKX is now a game-changer in the realm of music radio in Rochester. Can't see WPXY or Kiss 106.7 getting anywhere near them for the foreseeable future.

If they had a full-market coverage Class B signal that could reach every corner of the 6-county metro instead of a Class A license that covers Monroe County OK but starts to peter out around Farmington and Palmyra to the east and LeRoy to the west, they could be, not a strong #3, but #1 12+. Got a feeling one or more of the bigger signal FMs may be on the block before too long...wonder if the Langstons will make an offer?

That's a load of baloney, and you know it, qman.

That's true. Sad, but true.

That's a lucky (or not so lucky, depending on your perspective) coincidence and nothing more.

Legends is a great station, and there are some great people working there, qman included. Their success in the ratings comes only because of the genius of a select few of their local people. Crawford wouldn't know how to build a station into a ratings success if his life depended on it. Whether he can allow Legends to cash in on their ratings remains to be seen. Were I a Legends staffer (which I thankfully no longer am), I would do well to have Plan B ready to roll.

At the moment no other radio operation in Rochester has made a serious attempt to go after Legends. That could change at the drop of a hat. Plus if this competitor has the financial resources to spend money on talent plus offer a larger music rotation, then Legends, IMHO, could find itself in serious trouble.

I'm sure current employees and supporters of Legends will dispute my theory, but I've been around this market long enough to personally see history repeat itself.

Having a "Plan B" isn't such a bad idea folks!
