610 Changes

Anyone with any thoughts on 610's upcoming changes?

I'm pretty sure this is their last week with Sporting News Radio (SNR is moving to 1560) and the Chronicle last week had a story in which Adam Clanton is leaving 610 for increased duties at Channel 2.

I could see Brad Davies joining the 610 Morning Show, and maybe expanding local programming to 11p or Midnight during weeknights, since their only option for Sports network programming is Sports Byline USA.

I don't think there's any doubt this paves the way for Brad Davies to join the morning show. He and Marc worked well together when Davies sat in a while back.
As for Clanton, that's long overdue. It's so old hearing him say something, sneak his one-liner in then say "ummm" as he tries to get back on track. That's not to mention he really doesn't add anything of substance. His impressions are good, though.
One thing I would love is if during the sports and traffic updates, the anchors actually could stick to the news they're supposed to be delivering. Laura Reynolds is a huge offender here. I listened to a traffic report this afternoon that went nearly two minutes because everyone started joking right in the middle of the update. That's well and good to know the hosts are enjoying themselves, but when I'm driving home I want to know the traffic conditions without a bunch of crap snuck in.
I'd love to see their local programming go until 11. A market this size deserves it. As for what that will be ...

it is weird how so many people post on this site and it is obvious that either they don't work in radio or they have the brain power of a door knob.

how does snr "move" from one station to another? have you never written a contract before or negotiated a deal? are you dense? one contract ends (with sr610 and cbs) then another company may or may not come to an agreement and carry the now available sat content.

the fact that you even thought to phrase it that way shows that you are looking at it from an outsiders perspective that has no knowledge of the radio business. doofus

and clanton got canned because no body was listening to him. he didn't move on to ch2 for more duties. he got canned

Unless 610 is returning to its format 30 years ago - it is of no interest to me. As one of Gordon McLendon's heritage top-40 stations, it was as good as KLIF Dallas. I still remember the day they went country, and I stopped listening to KILT 610 forever.

According to David Barron both Adam Wexler and Matt Jackson are leaving 610 to become the new morning show at KBME. No offense to Clear Channel and their trolls on this board but is this career suicide? I do like hearing Barry Warner again but he sure sounds like Craig Roberts.

I was shocked this morning when I read about Jackson and Wexler leaving 610. The offers must be pretty sweet for them to leave the station that carries two of the city's three pro franchises. I think I remember reading that Rich Lord was staying at 610 mostly because of the Texans ... I wonder now if he might leave? And who will be with him in the afternoon? Henslee maybe, at least for now?

I really hate to hear that Adam Wexler is leaving KILT, but I'm rejoicing at Matt Jackson's departure.

Despite his near encyclopedic knowledge of sports and sports history, he is one of the most, if not THE most annoying "personalities" on Houston radio today, IMO.

Anytime he disagrees with Rich or a caller, he launches off into a tirade and he won't let go of it until he beats Rich or the caller into submission. I've lost track of the times I've tuned to another station or turned the radio off to get away from it. I usually wait about ten minutes and come back because I enjoy listening to Rich.

Barry Warner is the grand old man of Houston sports radio, and I've always liked him, but I'm afraid he's a little past his prime. He's been around so long he's reached that point in a radio man's career where he takes himself and his opinions much too seriously. He's starting to sound pompous, and when he tries to drive home a point, he sounds like a judge issuing a court ruling.

And while we're on the subject, I really wish they would tell their call screeners to be a bit less argumentative with callers. I've stopped calling in because they require me to spell out what I want to talk about. One screener has refused to put me in the queu -- twice -- because he didn't think I had anything worthwhile to say.

If a call screener refuses to put you on hold, it's probably because you actually didn't have anything worthwhile to say. Nothing ruins a good radio show like a bad caller. Just you might think it was a great take, doesn't mean it actually was.

You're right about the job of the screener. He's there to screen out the dead-head calls, and I have no problem with that. You can't do talk radio without a good screener.

But, as a long time radio man who has done issue-oriented and sports call-in shows in Houston and Fort Worth at different points in my career, I felt, and still feel, that I had something relevant to contribute to the conversation. I know the difference between "relevant" and "pointless", but the screener's negative attitude toward what I wanted to say made me so mad I hung up both times. He struck me as nothing less than someone who enjoys using his authority.

Even so, I still enjoy listening to the afternoon show on KILT, because it's the best local sports talk show I've ever heard, despite Matt Jackson, not because of him. I'm going to enjoy it even more now that I know Jackson is leaving. I'm another who thinks it would be great to have Rich and Charlie working together again.

I don't see Rich leaving 610. This move by Jackson and Wexler tells me as much as anything that 790 is not going away. I thought, as did many others, that their days as a sports station were numbered. Apparently this is not the case.
I no longer live in Houston - made the move back to Ohio last week - but Rich Lord was one of my favorites there. CP was my must-listen every day and I plan try to listen to him online from here whenever I can.
Filio, your note on the call screeners at 610 amused me only because a lot of callers with nothing worthwhile to say seem to get on the air!

***your note on the call screeners at 610 amused me only because a lot of callers with nothing worthwhile to say seem to get on the air!***

Isn't that the truth? That's part of why it still steams me a little. I can't get on because the screener doesn't agree with the point I want to make, but half-wits with absolutely nothing to say get in on a free pass. Go figure. No matter. It's of no importance.

I like listening to Rich Lord and Robert Hensely. I've known them both since we worked together at another station some years back, and they're solid professionals who do sports-talk the way it should be done. Having Laura Reynolds doing traffic in her own inimitable style -- especially on Fridays -- makes it a really fun show to listen to.

Agreed ... I think I was too hard on Laura in my first post in this thread. There were times her style made me laugh. That whole crew on 610 seems to mesh well together.

Filo, you are spot on in my opinion of Jackson and KILT's PM Drive show. I enjoy Rich much more when Matt was on vacation. I share your observation and as a UT alum, he always offended me with his endless negative UT takes. It almost sounded like he's bitter toward UT for something. Maybe he applied and was rejected. At least that's what it sounded like over the last couple of years he's been doing that show. As for him and Wexler moving it is career suicide for both and it's really a shame for Wexler. He is a decent talent as far as sports IQ goes, but his gig with the Rockets could have been a real career launcher for him. You know that KILT will excersise all efforts to get him excommunicated from that gig. As for Jackson, despite his obvious shortcomings he had a great showcase in PM Drive with the leader, Texan's pre and post game time and that one sub for Jim Rome a few weeks ago. Now going over to 790 in AM drive these two "second bananas" will never match and compete with the entertainment value and ratings of John & Lance. This market still isn't large enough to carry competing all-sports stations that way it is currently configured. Just like their 790 AM predicessors, they will garner no ratings and they will get the hook and will be relegated to "those Houston has-beens that were OK".

I'm glad you have the inside info on everything. You talked to Clanton about and he told you this, huh? Wow, you guys must be pretty tight.

Well...With all the changes/transactions/ and moves. I hope 610 justs moves it's format to the FM dial on CBS's 101 signal. Mega isn't ever gonna be able to compete with Univsion so..

SPORTS 101 (fm) is the way to go. (plus it has a good ring to it)

I'm no expert on the format, but there are some english language stations that would kill for KLOL's current audience share.
