610 The Fan

Along with 1660 going talk, it looks like 610 has changed its name from "The Franchise" to "The Fan." What's the point of this name change?

I happened to notice it today when Packman was running through the list of affiliates at the top of the show. I don't live in Charlotte, I just catch him on affiliates around the Carolinas so I'm not a WFNZ listener per se.

"The Fan" rolls off the tongue better than "The Franchise" and is probably easier to remember, but IMO it still doesn't make much sense to me to change the name of an established station. Does someone else in the market own rights the "Franchise" name?

Did they make up that name when the Panthers were starting up? It's been a while, it seems like.

I know they've been around a while, but all the times I've seen or heard them discussed, I've never heard anybody call them "The Franchise." It's always "610", or even "WFNA" or "WFNZ."
"The Fan" is pretty well established as a sports station name, it'll be easier to roll off the tongue.

Where would they even get a name like "The Franchise?" That's sort of strange, especially since CBS likes to use "The Fan" for its sports stations.

They should get the WFNA calls for 610, it fits better with the format than WFNZ.

I think the point that 610 decided to become "The Fan" was to possibly coincide with the arrival of Charlotte Bobcats Basketball to the station this season
