620 Mornings

How does 620 deal with this hack Dan Sileo? I cant see why he even has the gig in Orlando, let alone getting syndicated here. Actually I can kind of believe it considering how cheap Clear Channel is, they probabally pay the guy peanuts.

I dont know if any of you know this or not, but Sandy Penner got fired from WFNZ in Charlotte.

Any chance of him coming back to Tampa? I seem to remember he left on fairly good terms, and the morning slot has not been the same since he left.

Sileo is just about the worst thing on Morning radio excep the utter crap that is on 1010, but that goes without saying.

The last several years have been pretty bad on 620 with Chris Thomas dying and Sandy Penner leaving.

Ron and Ian are tolerable, but they cant hold Chris Thomas's jock strap.

I hate to say it, but I would almost rather hear sorry a$$ tijay rives than Sileo

The only thing I can explain as to why Sileo is in the entire Central Florida region is that he sells ads. I've said it before on this board and I'll say it again: the amount of ad revenue a show can generate supercedes the content or quality of the show on the air in this day and age, especially at Clear Channel. BTW, I can guarantee you Sileo isn't getting paid peanuts.

As for Sandy, I was very curious as to why he would go back to Charlotte from morning drive in Tampa. I never really could figure that one out. Somewhat stunned to hear that he's no longer at WFNZ--I only got to listen to him once out of happenstance when I was travelling through the Charlotte area a couple of years ago. I didn't think he was bad there, and I definitely didn't think he was bad here. This market desparately needs someone to shake things up as far as sports talk goes around here, and no, Tampa Radio Fan, we DON'T want some reject from the northeast who's gonna talk about New York and New England sports all frickin' day long, because US FLORIDIANS DON'T CARE ABOUT THOSE TEAMS!!!

..that would be "We" floridians...but that aside, we all grow up..well, most of us...how many times can you talk about the top 10 things on this list...that list....minority head coaches at the Super Bowl over..and over...and over..and over...the underfunded mediocrity that is St Petersburg Baseball....or how much Tony Bruno hates the Cowboys....over and over..and over.....

Maybe Sandy just grew up....

I'll take Sandy Penner back on 620. That is, as long as he doesn't interview any Lightning players. He's bad luck.

I thought Ian Beckles did a nice job filling in for the late, great Chris Thomas when he was going through the final stages of his cancer. Ron Diaz and Ian together have been a disappointment. One can only hear an ex-NFL o-lineman and an ex-FM DJ talk about their golf games so often.

Todd Wright has said on the air at 620, while filling in for Duemig, that he'd take a full-time slot on 620 if they offered him one. That would make 620 a runaway winner (but remember, even with this lineup, they are one of the highest rated all-sports stations in the country).

An update on Penner--earlier this week he was doing guest host duties for the morning show on WPEN and discussing the upcoming Phillies Spring Training. Wonder if there'll be a sighting of him in Clearwater once that gets rolling? But I digress. I do understand that last summer he had a tryout up there, so I'm going to speculate that he's returning to his stomping grounds and not heading back here to Tampa whatsoever.

As far as Wright, I'm next to certain that he is more than comfortable at SNR, and since 1010 Sports is with them, I strongly doubt he would even consider going to 620 even for interviews (I don't recall hearing him on the Animal since 1010 switched--if he has, let me know).

Now here's something really interesting...listening to 1470 on the way home this morning (to avoid otherwise awful morning sportstalk), I hear the local Sportscenter update...and the guy (who didn't introduce himself) sounded awfully familiar. Sure enough, it's 1010's morning anchor, Tom Krasnicki (the French pronunciation of Marty St. Louis and Vinny LeCavalier was a dead giveaway). Here's my question: is 1470 so fricking cheap that they have to enlist the help of the morning anchor OF A COMPETING RADIO STATION to do their morning updates? Why can't we just blow up sports talk in this market altogether (like MJ/Schnitt on demand on the Animal, classic country intertwined with Cletus T. Judd on the Beast, and dead air on 1470)???

I know that Genesis recently added some in house news people, but until then I think both their news and sports reports were being fed from Metro. Perhaps Krasnicki is a Metro employee (as Jim Lighthall was when he was doing mornings at 1010). If that is the case, I am sure he is not supposed to work the competing sports station, but maybe someone was out sick. That's only a guess....

Whitney Johnson

How about theee most entertainng guy on radio, Whitney Johnson doing mornings.

Whitney lives his life like he talks it. Booze, buds (you know which kind) beer and boobs.

Not that's not dull.

Re: Whitney Johnson

I've heard Johnson fill in for Steve Duemig in emergency situations and I have always walked away with the impression that he has little ability to hold a show for three or four hours. He's always seemed like the type who starts out, "Well the Bucs lost yesterday. I'm going to open up the phone lines now to get your thoughts on the Bucs' loss."

He seems like a nice guy, he has a good sense of humor, he is a natural in giving updates every half hour, but I can't see him being pulled from his current job.

Sileo has the ability to hold the show for the amount of time he's hosting it, and he has an opinion on everything (and isn't afraid to share it). It's his style that seems to be amateur--and I think he's even working on that.

Ron and Ian are the worst. All they do is brag about the free food they get everyday. How freaking rude and that should be illegal. They give these free plugs for restaurants just throwing food at them. How disgusting. I listen to Dan Patrick and the grind on 1010 and then JP . No way will I listen to illiterate Steve ******mig. Thank goodness the annoying Sports chix and Tom Krasnicki were fired.1010 is better by subtraction .

I certainly would like to hear something else on 620 in the morning. I can't stand Sileo. And I wish 1010 would get something in there for the morning drive because Mike Pepper - a good journalist it appears - is a really boring radio host. Lighthall is good, but his knowledge is limited to a couple of specific sports it seams. But, I must admit, being a USF alum and big fan of their teams, it is good to hear their insight for USF sports.

CTyner - TKraz is probably on 1470 because 1010 let him go. I'd love to know the details behind that, Pepper makes it sound like they offered him a position to stay but he declined. I'm pretty sure he knew the afternoon show was only a temporary gig until they found something to replace the chics.

As much as I hate to say this, I do miss the chics now, because The Grind is terrible too. Their gimmicks suck, and they don't have good radio voices. Is it called the grind because you grind your teeth listening to them? 1010 should have brought back The Free Stretch. He may be a Florida Gator homer, but at least his show was entertaining.

tampabayguy - I don't like hearing about radio DJ's talking about the free food they get either, but we all know it's just advertisement. JP's show is the same way, having "big papi" tell you how good the wings are everywhere they go. I agree, it's annoying. This whole "how many ads can you plug inside your show because no one will buy commercial time from you" is so annoying.
That said, if you don't like Ron and Ian, I say give Dan Patrick a shot.

Is Colin Cowherd on anywhere in the market? I know a lot of folks there don't like him from his Tampa TV days, but I think he's light years beyond the local stuff in most markets.... (they DID bring him in at eSPN to be the LA morning drive show, even though it's national)....

Cowherd is doing noon to 3 at 1040. Good national show and it's good to hear someone who knows something about the Tampa Bay area. From what I can tell he has nothing against the area (although he does not regard it as a major market) but he does have a definite grudge against the TV station he worked for while he was here.

Sileo is a Clear Channel soldier. They love him b/c he does work cheap and they make him believe he's good. He's good at being a liar. Like talking about his NFL days... as a practice squad guy. He wasn't even a good player at the University of Miami. But, by listening to him you would think he was Warren Sapp. He's that guy that ESPN makes fun of on their ESPN Radio commercials mocking local guys. Tampa is too big a market for that guy. Jacksonville maybe b/c he knows Football I suppose. Orlando, makes no sense. The only thing he knows about the NBA is that they use a leather ball.

He's the epitome of what's wrong with sports talk radio. I don't know if he admits as much, but he & his wife also do the sales for his show. He's practically a broker. They pay him a salary, but they also pay him commission on sales. Which, is probably where he makes the bulk of his money.

Though, CC loves that deal. Hey this guy will sell his butt off and work cheap. What's not to like?

I like Sileo. He does not kiss the listener's ass. You guiys are just pissed that he tells it like it is. The Bucs Suck and the Rays do not have fan support because the Tampa Bay Area sucks when it comes to baseball.

I hope Ron and Ian will consider having me on there show someday. I have been e-mailing them hoping to be on there show and also shadowing them for school but I still have had no response back. Anyone have any connections? Thanks, Adam Baker "CEO" WKID 96.7 www.wkid967fm.com

It has nothing to do with his actual opinions. It's the fact he only speaks about three topics everyday. And, if you ask him to deviate he folds like a deck of cards. It shows he has no range. He's not a good listen for information, nor is he an interesting story teller. So, there's no entertainment value. He comes across as the prototypical dumb jock to me.
