630 WJDB Thomasville back on the air

Had some business to take care of in Thomasville again. After a long absence, WJDB 630 is back on the air with some sort of Hot AC format, most likely satellite fed. Not sure what service they're using, but I heard both Nickelback's "Photograph" and that "When September Ends" song, in between well produced local spots clearly first-run on WJDB-FM (95.5).

Passing by the studios on Hwy. 43, there's also a portable marquee sign with "Paul Finebaum on 630 AM". And to think, I actually thought about moving to that town :)
______________

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll have to try to pick them up tonight.

That might be a little difficult...they are licensed for daylight hours only.
______________

The listings I've seen have them running 49 watts at night. That's not correct?

Unfortunately, Braswell is right as far as the license operation for WJDB is concerned, the AM is only on the air from sunup to sundown.

The 49 watts is authorized, but unapplied for. Ivey and I have talked about it. All he has to do, is write a letter to the Commission, informing them that WJDB will begin operating at night on such and such date. He will have to tell them how he accomplish this (i.e., a power dropping resistor circuitry installed in the main RCA transmitter, or a separate, low power transmitter (such as an LPB-AM50). He will also have to tell them the proposed antenna current at 49 watts, and how this current will be measured.

Of course, WJDB's antenna and ground system was installed in 1956, so it will not be optimum operation, but 49 watts at 630 should cover 10 to 15 miles pretty good.
______________

I may have asked this before, but would you happen to know why 630 was off the air for so long? Transmitter problems, perhaps?
______________

Rf problems in the studio gear, but mainly because he couldn't find anything to program that he could make money from.
______________

That's what I was thinking too.

P.S. If this current format fails, Mr. Ivey should consider trying Rejoice Black Gospel. That may be the ticket to new success, for this station.

WRJX 1230 (Jackson) uses that service, so I'm not sure that was an option.

Even though 630 is a daytimer, I'd have suggested Sporting News Radio to compliment "Finebaum". Since stations in our area typically get programming off da' bird, sports talk would be something different that might get listeners, even if it is national. But that not to say you couldn't wrap it around local shows and/or Alabama/Auburn network programming.
