I didn't see "Late Show with David Letterman" or "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on the list!

In what category would you expect them to appear?

It was officially called a "comedy-drama" but I would have classified it as a black/dark comedy. Problem was.....it depended upon which episode you watched. Season 1 was hilarious at times then it switched to a much darker drama then back to comedy. Very difficult to classify.

I think if they were nominated they would have been under "Outstanding Variety Series". The list?
The Colbert Report
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart
Jimmy Kimmel Live
Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
Real Time With Bill Maher
Saturday Night Live

Sure enough, the above shows were nominated for Variety Series.

Also, if anyone cares, here are the reality nominations:

Show
So You Think You Can Dance
Amazing Race
Dancing with the Stars
Top Chef
Project Runway
The Voice

Host
Cat Deeley
Phil Keoghan
Ryan Seacrest
Betty White
Tom Bergeron

I'm old enough to remember real variety shows and I would not call any of the late night programs "variety". Leno features his monologue and usually one program-ending musical number by a largely unknown band. That is hardly variety. Letterman doesn't even have that.

I would classify Leno as being Infomercial since virtually every guest is pushing their latest project and little else. Letterman isn't quite as direct but largely the same program type.

If a program such as "The Late Show" and "Tonight" has regular features such as a monologue, discussions, sketches, and musical acts, I would consider it a variety program.

Letterman does have a monologue (although it has become a Political bashing of Republicans) Also has Musical acts to end his show.

They both have pretty much kept the same format as the Johnny Carson era.

The traditional variety show is exemplified by Ed Sullivan, Dean Martin, Red Skelton and Carol Burnett.

The late night shows are not the same.
