650 WSM night coverage in the northeast

I live in Johnston, RI just west of Providence and listen to WSM every night late at night and the signal is usually fair at best. It seldom comes in with a good clear signal. I've heard them claim they reach 38 states at night but they struggle to reach Rhode Island. I always listen while driving on my way to work and my car radio is great for AM and FM DX. Is WSM directional with a null to the northeast? I receive 1110 WBT from Charlotte loud and clear but WSM is always weaker.
______________

WSM is non directional, where WBT is directional pointing straight north and south. While WSM is going out equally in all directions, WBT is putting more signal your direction.

I live in Memphis, WBT doesn't even make it out here (unless it's right before sunset, sometimes) and WSM is oblitarated by local WCRV on 640. I mean, you can hear it, but the splatter is too much.

WSM is omni-directional. However, WBT is not. It has a deep null back to its south and west from Charlotte, so it pushes the majority of its power in your direction. I can hardly hear it at night here in Columbus, Ohio; it's there, but usually pretty weak. It's the same situation as with WMVP (ESPN 1000) from Chicago when it's running full-power. 1000 nulls its signal big-time towards Seattle, so that's why it peels paint up and down the Eastern seaboard.

WSM is usually very reliable here (Coldwater, MI) at night, with WNMT Nashwauk, MN occasionally fighting with it. But about 95% of the time, WSM is a very dominant station. In fact, you can actually hear them with a very very faint signal during winter daytime hours.
______________

That used to be the case here in Columbus, Ohio before local 610 WTVN went IBOC during the day. Nashville is about 350 miles from Columbus, but I was always surprised to hear WSM here during the day because the ground conductivity down towards Nashville is awful. Not as bad as Atlanta, but it's not very good.

So true. Was just in San Juan, PR for a night and WMVP was the strongest mainland station receivable there at night. Which I found to be quite strange. Did hear WSM too, but it was very weak.

In Boston WSM has interference from the 9 watt night signal of WSRO 650 in west suburban Ashland MA, but WSM overcomes it in Boston some nights.

The best way for you to hear WSM from your location would be on Sirius channel 111.
Digital quality and no fading for an extremely modest cost.
