660 KTNN WINDOW ROCK, AZ

Fantastic catch!!!

Wow!

Was that other station in the background WFAN? You said it was nulled but was it completely nulled?

That Spanish station is most likely the Cuban that makes WFAN hard to hear down here in Tampa.

I should try for KTNN again. I assumed it was impossible to make it this far but now it looks like there's hope after all.

Yep, the other station you hear in this clip was WFAN that just came up slightly out of the null during this time, otherwise it was hardly audible.

gar fla, I would think it's probably best to try for KTNN maybe within an hour or less before Window Rock, AZ sunset, while skip is already well in progress where you are, but KTNN is still on their daytime non-directional pattern. This month (November), sunset for KTNN is at 5:15pm MST (7:15pm EST), and in December it's at 5pm MST / 7pm EST. I think it would be better to try toward the end of the month while the daylight time is still getting somewhat shorter, as, for example, on Nov 30, it will have already been fairly dark before KTNN changes to their directional pattern. I've occasionally used similar concepts to my advantage when DXing TPs. For example, near the end of September and October, I was able to get fairly good signals from 774-JOUB Akita, Japan, while it was still somewhat dark outside, even though local pest 760-KFMB had already switched from their 50kW night pattern to their 5kW day pattern.

Thanks for that info about KTNN.

I didn't know they are non directional in the day. The only times I've listened for them is late at night and all I've gotten was the mix of Spanish, WFAN, and WORL.

Kilokat, what time of night did you get KTNN? According to the signal pattern map, there's a huge null in the direction of New York and the rest of the signal goes north, south, and west.

So I guess it's just like with WWKB 1520.

They have a similar pattern only concentrating the power to the east, yet many in the midwest can still hear them.

I thought it was impossible to get them here for the longest time but I did eventually.

You're not in the actual concentrated null of KTNN so it looks like some signal makes it out to the ENE. It gives me hope for maybe hearing them possibly late at night too. Same for KCBS.

I wasn't able to listen tonight for KTNN before they switched from daytime mode. Maybe tomorrow or the next day.

It seems like there is a very strong west to east path this month. Although in Central Mass, I could get a weak WHO from Des Moines (got it in SC earlier this week). KXEL Waterloo on 1540 was booming in (never got a sniff of that station before). I think KTNN and KKOB are doable in SW Fla under the right conditions at this time of year.
Stranger things have happened..

So I listened to 660 tonight between 7 and 7:30.

I heard a talk station slowly fade in and out which was WORL. WFAN couldn't be heard hardly at all and only in their exact direction.

About 7:15, I started to hear what sounded like another talk station behind WORL.

Then I went to find KTNN's online stream. It was two men talking and I'm not certain but the voices sounded kind of like what I was hearing behind WORL.

It couldn't have been WFAN because they have football game on.

By 7:30, all I could hear was WORL, WFAN creeping in, and of course the Cuban.

Could I have heard KTNN?

Now, it's getting to be close to 8 and I'm listening to 1530 to see if I can hear KFBK Sacramento before they switch directions. I'm hearing what sounds like talk behind the station from Cincinnati. Can't get any ID as of yet.

That other station on 1530 behind WCKY got stronger so I went to find the online stream of KFBK.

It wasn't them. I would have been able to ID this mystery station had they given ID but they didn't. At one point, it dominated and WCKY was in the background.

I have no idea what station that could have been.

I heard KKOB (it was KOB then) in Ohio in November 1965 about 20 minutes past local sunset. WABC was totally down for about 10 minutes because of a massive east coast power outage and somehow or another, my 12 year old ears were at the right place at the right time. I don't think Window Rock existed at the time...wish it had as WNBC would probably have been down as well.

When I was a kid, there was a place west of Cincinnati at night where WCKY would always fade out & something else would be there. Unfortunately, it was at an intersection & I couldn't get dad to park the 1960 Buick in the middle of the road until an ID came through. Smart man...

I remembered once picking up KTNN booming into downtown San Francisco, listening to them from outside my hotel room there a few years ago. So last week, when I was once again in a hotel in downtown SF, I looked for KTNN, and there they were! It's probably not an impressive catch to anybody, might even be a regular thing, but just wasn't what I expected to hear in the heart of the City by the Bay. I guess you could say the "psychological" distance from Window Rock to the SF Financial District is great.

Actually, now that I think about it, KNBR has been a regular catch for me while traveling around the southwest at night -- which would be the equivalent distance.

KTNN was also the last 50kw CP given, It was issued In 1986, Bobonthejob, I like hearing you and others talk about how you used to DX as kids, with portables under the coovers at night, I'm 13 and I do just that every night

I understand KTNN broadcast in C-QUAM stereo at one point, but I think it's been discontinued. KTNN was pretty strong during the day along I-40 from west of Albuquerque to around Flagstaff when I passed through a few months ago. Unfortunately, I did not get anything in stereo on the old AMAX Walkman.

At night, it was in and out in Pasadena and I also recall hearing it well at night in SF.

Could it be the only station in the US carrying native-language programming? Some of their speech programming (news, etc.) is in Navajo.

You can hear some native language stuff in and around South Dakota...and perhaps a few other places (Oklahoma?, New Mexico?) And yes, KTNN does have a pretty good nighttime signal in much of the western U.S.

These stations carry at least some Navajo programming:
KABR 1500
KTDB 89.7
KNDN 960
KGAK 1330
KGLP 880
KHAC 89.7
KRMH
