680 The Fan's nighttime signal

Has anyone noticed a better nighttime signal for 680 the Fan outside the perimeter for the past few weeks like I have?

The station fades in and out like a distant but you can actually hear it.

I haven't pulled out my Sony ICF-2010 receiver to check WCNN's modulation on 680kHz lately, but back in the late 90s they were running AM power side modulation. That is, they were emphasizing one side band over the other (I forget which it was at the moment). That put a little "umph" in their night time signal when they were using it. However, when that tornado came through the area (I forget the exact year), it knocked out a bunch of equipment and took out some towers. One of the pieces was the power side modulator as I haven't heard them use it since. It could be, as was mentioned, the directional pattern is not switching on during the evening. I can't tell at my home since I live ITP and have a good signal from them at night time regardless.

Taylorengineer... lol.. been there done that! :)

That is such a nightmare pattern! Glen Clark swore up and down he could re do that with 3 or 4 towers when I worked there.. they should have done it. They should have bought Corbin, KY and moved it up the dial somewhere.. but they didn't. Shoulda Coulda Woulda!!

Why would anyone want to listen to 680 at night? They still have the worst automation system in the world. The same promo playing every break over and over again, sometimes not even going back to ESPN programming.
Can someone get their act together over there?

When I get NE of the city I sometimes pick up WPTF out of Raleigh at night.

Well at least I was able to tell. Yes their automation is horrible. I can listen to ESPN on XM and do I just like to surf the AM dial to see if anything new is going on.

I am surprised at how weak 680 and 640 WGST are at night. At my home near Cumberland, I can barely receive 680 and can not receive 640 at all. However, I have been able to consistently receive Sports 1530 WCKY and 1510 WLAC on my Sangean for several years. I rely on 1510 since I enjoy Coast To Coast AM and since the WGST signal can not be received 10 miles from the transmitter at night.

PTF is the oldest signal on 680 on the east coast. WCNN can't even think about radiating anything toward the NE at night. Believe it or not.. you can hear it sometimes down in Mobile pretty clearly at night! The main lobe of the night pattern goes SW across downtown. They protect KNBR in SF, Memphis, Corbin, KY, St. Pete had a 680. Every one of those guys were there before WCNN.. so hence the pattern looks like a limp[EDIT] with some spikes around it. Its a nightmare!

There is also a 680 in Louisville, hence no signal to the north at night. That night time pattern takes 8 towers to make. I can imagine how much of a nightmare it is to maintain.

Has anyone ever copyrighted the term "limp [EDIT] pattern"? :D :D

(...and 8 towers were "erected" to keep it that way.)

Sorry Admins.. didn't mean to be offensive with my description of the pattern. I didn't think in that context it would be considered offensive

They probably didn't want radio-info.com to come up on a google search for "[edit]" ;D

This is the second night that I either they are off the air, or they have changed their pattern. I live in Va Highland and it use to blast in here at night.

What is up????
