However, if there is a silver lining, Montreal's loss is our gain. I too, am getting a pretty good signal from BBC Radio 5, on 693, which I could never have gotten until now.

Yep, add KGGF to the list, I caught them this morning at 7:30am EST. Also nabbed WZAP Bristol, VA. at 7am - both new loggings here.

Might be my now-dimmed Canuck ancestry, but I recall plans for torching both of them years back, before the French and English news came on those frequencies.

The 690 and 940 frequencies were once the Montreal home to the French and English services of the CBC, which dumped AM in that city in favor of FM some years ago--a trend that has snowballed in Canada the past few years--several other longtime CBC outlets have also made the move, as well as many private stations.

Given the current landscape of radio, how big a loss are these stations to Montreal? I have never been anywhere close to the city and have no idea what an impact it might make, if any.

From central MA nothing on 940 this evening but at around 7:15 PM I heard a very faint version of Credence Clearwater song on 690. Where it's coming from I don't know.

According to their Facebook Page 1000 watt COOL COUNTRY 940 WGFP Webster, Mass was picked up in Quebec now that CINW is gone. I posted about getting them down here in Bristol, CT and that's what they responded with. They said someone emailed them that.

Egg on my face-AM 940 Webster is right in my back yard-10-12 mi or so although I got the station about 20 mi away (in Milford MA) and very weak.
Never really listened to it during the day.

I wil have to make a trip to the hinterlands and see if I can't pick up the BBC.

It is sad that those two stations are going off the air. Here, however, in SC, 940 is dominated by Macon's WMAC, which at 10kw actually has a decent night signal through most of SC and GA. I got CINF a couple of times, several years ago, but it almost never came in.

690 is dominated during the day by WOKV, as it comes in all day, almost as good as the local stations here, all the way to Myrtle and Wilmington. It comes in often at night, but very weak, as not much usually comes in on there at night.

I'm using a Realistic DX-440 (rebranded Sangean 803A) on its internal antenna. Tonight I'm getting a 'hollow' sound, which means that I'm picking up a couple of their transmitters.

I'm going to start a 693 thread, so any folks interested will get a heads up when there's action going on...like right now.

When did WMAC stop being WMAZ? It's fairly regular in SW Ohio after sunrise. Doubt I'll be getting anything on 690 in the shadow of WLW. Maybe next time I'm in Vermilion OH

Quite a while back, in fact I didn't realize it had been that long. They switched to WMWR 08/23/96, then to WMAC 07/01/98. (Call letter history from www.fccinfo.com)

Sure makes a mess of 690/710 just south of Indianapolis.

During the day it's not bad on 690 or 710 and at night it can get pretty bad during good skywave conditions.

I have noticed that during the day when you're 80 mi. away between Columbus and WLW the IBOC hash on 680, 690, 710 and 720 is so bad nothing on those frequencies can make it through the noise.

WHAS really gets beat up in Indiana. At night, you start to hear IBOC noise on 840 (from a mix of WCCO 830 & KOA 850) as close as exit 29 on I-65...36 air miles from the stick. By the time you get 80 miles out, it's still understandable, but not pleasant to listen to. Once you top 100 miles north, it's mostly hiss...and at times, you can't even positively ID it as WHAS...and this is called progress?

Since 690 and 940 have left the air, I have been hearing WIST from the Big Easy (New Orleans), and CJGX from Yorkton, SK on a fairly regular basis here in Northern IL.
