I'm on the Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast off and on for a few weeks this month and wondering what's become of the formerly potent signal on 690? Its a shadow of its former self during the daytime and inaudable at night. Back in the 'TIX days it was competitive with WWL's monster daytime signal, and still perfectly listenable at night. (In fact, where I live in Northern Illinois, from time to time WTIX would ride in over Montreal's CBF nights during the 70s and 80s). Now...even the 690 daytime signal over the salt water path to the beaches is absolutely pathetic. 10KW? 600, 800, and 990 all appear to be doing better. I've used several recievers as well as the excellent a.m. radio in my rental car, and the result always the same.
Did Katrina take it out? Did the current ownership let it slip? Both? Neither? Something else? Bad enough that the national treasure (WTIX) has been replaced by what sounds to me like an absolute mess (WIST), but a once fabulous a.m. signal seems to have fallen by the way as well.
(Apologies if this has already been discussed)
