6ABC rubbing it in?

First in HD!Visting family down in Lebanon, and these ads are starting to get annoying. Its been what, three years now and other stations are now in HD. I don't see the point in rubbing it in, but I guess they feel the need to subtley remind everyone their number one. I don't see why they don't come out and just say "Action News, Delaware Valley's News Leader which rapes the competition!"

On the flip side, I found Gardner to be a lot more likeable than I remember.

Well, up until just recently (and I think because it was Vince DeMentri doing the ad) nbc10 was still bragging about being the first to have a website, and some other things from 15 years ago. It was part of their proud to work for a station not afraid to try new things (BTW, 10 still isn't HD locally yet) campaign. So they might brag about being first to go HD for a while. I guess they can go for a few more weeks, since nbc10 will be hd next month.

As for braging about being #1, that is pretty normal for tv and radio. Even the ones not #1 often will brag about being the #1 something.

Also on the flip side they've had the same logo since the 70's.

And I'm sure you remember the Action News theme. 8)

The music doesn't bother me much, and I don't mind it at all. Up back in my neck of the woods WKBW used the same music up until 2003. Recently however the station is celebrating their 50th anniversary and within the last month have brought back the "Action News" theme, although there two important differences between WPVI and WKBW:

1. WKBW brands itself as "Eyewitness News", not "Action News"

2. WKBW use to be a huge #1 station much like WPVI is, but since around 1999/2000 or so they have fallen from #1 to something like #12.

6Abc is the standard bearer for news in the market. They are the cream of the crop. Granted they still participate in silly practices of starting off broadcast from Chickie and Petes with ignorant sports fan alcoholics, they otherwise are exceptional. Jim Gardner is a legend!

Also another point about bragging about being first to go HD. Its all in the mind, to drive in the point to the viewer that we're (6abc) the best.

Just about everyone in this market knows 6abc has the number 1 news program. Even if they never looked up the ratings. Why is this? Because everyday about 5 times a day action news begins with "Action News....Delaware Valley's leading news program"

Maybe part of the reason they stay on top is because they are scandal-free, and they all seem like guys you would like to have a beer with. (even the gals). The "guy next-door" image works for them.

IIRC, one would have to go back to the early to mid 80's to find a "scandal". When word got out how anchor/reporter Chris Wagner treated some staffers (not too pleasantly), she was shown the door. It seems PVI does not care for the "diva" type (altho' one time I met Monica Malpass and she came off as too big to be signing pictures).
