7:00 News

I think that if anyone in Boston does, it will probably be either WCVB or WHDH. Right now, I'm thinking WCVB, since I'm not sure they'll be able to keep the lame "Inside Edition" show on the air once the real Oprah-calypse happens, since I think that show is owned by CBS. And WHDH because their primary focus has always been NEWS. I'm surprised they still don't have a 4:30 AM newscast.

I don't think either WCVB or WHDH would give up the early prime time slot of 7:00 to rehash news from an hour earlier. WHDH starts its news at 4:00, so having news at 7 would give them three solid hours of news! Even for the "news station" this is a bit much. 7PM newscasts are usually done in smaller markets by stations that are struggling for programming (i.e., WLNE in the New Bedford/Providence market). Boston is a top ten market and both Ch. 5 and Ch.7 should have no problem finding programming in the fall. I think news has its place on television, but these stations are mostly out there for entertainment options and news is hardly entertainment. I suppose a near duplication of news at 7 could be cost effective because the station would need to invest in syndicated programming, but with the exception of WBZ, that pre-empts the weekend versions of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! often for paid programming, WCVB and WHDH appear as if they are not in real need of cash like WBZ may be. The ironic thing is that WBZ would be a candidate for a 7PM newscast except they have the successful Wheel/Jeopardy! duo locked up.

They'd get their clock cleaned by "Wheel" and "Jeopardy" on sister station WBZ.

It's been working fairly well in Providence - WJAR's 7 PM news is the 4th highest rated 7 PM news in the nation as well as the highest rated newscast in the market (by share). It regularly beats Wheel of Fortune on WPRI and of course whatever they have on WLNE.

Is that right? The syndication juggernaut that is "Wheel Of Fortune" gets beat by local news in Providence? Different strokes... speaking of, you think if WLNE had advanced promotion of a "bra infomercial" airing at 7 PM, it might get a higher rating?

In fairness, the 7:00 news on WJAR is definitely one of the best in the market. They've done a lot to break from the traditional newscast format.

It's also a lot more relaxed than the other newscasts in town - something which viewers have seemed to like. The banter is usually pretty good.

That's good to hear about WJAR, but it seems that they started the 7pm newscast in response to WLNE just like they did 3 decades ago. The ratings, of course, are the final proof and it sounds like a great success at 7pm unlike most of the country.
