7 PM Fire at WCKY-AM's Transmitter Yesterday?

The PD at WCKY-AM told Randi Rhodes that the station was off the air yesterday from 7 PM to 7:30 PM because of a fire at the transmitter.

What other stations use that transmitter site? Could a fire there take only WCKY-AM off the air?

Is there any local reporting on the subject?

That's actually pretty good, being only off for a half-hour. Maybe they went to an aux unit.

For what it's worth, I actually tuned by WCKY/1530 at about 9 or so last night and heard it on the air, with Randi's show. WCKY does very well up here at night.

Actually, Randi said it was 45 minutes. I hope Jean Schmidt's cronies get busted for setting that fire :)

Don't say that, someone out there will believe you, if they don't already. :)

It's 1530.

Really? A caller from the Queen City told Rhodes that other stations also operate from that location. If 1530's is the only transmitter there, it makes the timing of the fire even more interesting.

I've noticed that since the fire, I can't pick up WCKY as well. WCNW bleeds in and the "tuned" indicator on my radio flickers a lot at night. Are they operating at reduced power?

CC could be changing format to Hot Talk 1530 or maybe those Bubba Bo guests found a new place to use the propane grill :)
Edited by microbob on 08/04/05 05:32 PM.

Other stations are in the same CC studio complex. There are no other stations at that transmitter site. The caller may not understand that the studio and transmitter locations are separate.

Here is what the transmiiter site looks like. It's in Villa Hills KY. The transmitter was replaced in 2000.

On the Randi Rhodes show, don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see. On Wednesday night, she had a few callers who differed with her views, and they made sense, Republican or Democrat. Her only argument was to stumble around, end the call and goto commercial. Immediately following the break, she came back, took the Cincy caller and started railing on WCKY. She was dangling her feet in the water of "this was intentional!!" This is broadcasting. I've had transmitters go down on me in ice storms, tornado warnings and major car accidents. It's frustrating. It happens. When you get back on-air, you apologize for the disruption, brief the listener on what they missed while your signal was dark, and move on. A projected 15% voter turnout, on a special election. Something tells me conservatives and liberals both have more problems on their hands than a radio station with a .8 share in the market going off the air at 7pm, when most people either have already voted or decided not to. I may be wrong, but I'm using logic.

Randi Rhodes really tried to make a story of this. Funny when confronted about it by 700WLW and asked to go on the air about it on The Big One she wouldn't. Why? Because she knew she was trying to make a story from nothing. I think what was said by her producer was that she was "confused" (in regards to going into the squared circle on 700WLW). No better way to describe her than "confused." Why couldn't she back up her statements on The Big One? Well it takes talent to do that.

Love ya all.

Finally some common sense.

Thanks to you and boom-mic for injecting some common sense into this thread. My gosh, I've never seen such ridiculous speculation in my life.

WYSTLE's back!

We've missed you....or at least I have.

Wasn't there an "H" in your name?

LOVE,

Don your tin foil hats folks!

Isnt it amazing how everything becomes a conspiracy, and that we have to BLAME another person. It gets OLD folks.

Welcome to radio folks..... equipment fails even when we do a good job at maintaining it. That is why us engineers are paid the big bucks (BAWWWWW HAWWWW HAWWW).

Speaking as an engineer, it is very frustrating to have a station go down. You bust your butt to try and keep it on air. I am sure that the CC-Cincy engineers put in quite a few hours to get this back up and running and rushed around to ensure that it got back up as soon as possible.

I have had a few smoked transmitters, and there is nothing like the sinking feeling of walking into the transmitter building with smoke billowing, and that stench of fried electronics, knowing that your day was just extended.
