700 WTUB Orange-Acton, MA

Hey guys,

I had a nocturnal episode this morning and turned on my radio. This was just after 4:00 AM, so I barely missed all of the TOH's that normally I try to tune in for. I was tuned to AM 700 and instead of hearing WLW (which is NORMALLY much stronger sans IBOC) I heard an ESPN affiliate. I was very hopeful for KALL in Salt Lake City or even KXLX in Spokane. It was neither one of the two, but I did catch an ID at 4:03 AM. Something very rare for an ESPN station. Usually it's at the TOH and ONLY at the TOH. This station was WTUB Orange-Acton, MA. After days and weeks of trying, I finally got my 800th new AM log!

WTUB is 650 miles from my location and they are supposed to be daytime only. But there they were in the early morning hours with their 2.5kw ND pattern coming in WELL over WLW. Not the epic KNBR or CBU catch I would have wanted for my 800th log, but i'll definitely take anything I can get.

Speaking of CBU, while trying for them this morning, I heard a weak to poor Spanish station. Radio bearing was NW/SE. Any ideas?

Nice catch with WTUB. I caught them last September with the ESPN format during sunset skip - not an easy station to hear in our location. Your Spanish station on 690 was most likely Radio Progresso, Cuba. 800 logs! Congrats! I'm at about 650 and counting since I started DXing again in 2009...

May as well mark a milestone with a goodie. Aside from a few, New England AM stations have to be rare from 650 miles. Catch #1000 for me from the Long Island days was KWWL Waterloo IA on 1330. It had become real rare to hear a K-anything after while.

Have only idly been DXing since relocating to NE PA. There's maybe about 350 stations on the new list. Much of the interest here has been because of this forum, though.

Good going Lawppy! May your number 1000 be another New Englander!

Nice catch Lawppy!! Particularly given the dominance of WLW on that frequency. One correction though: WTUB serves Orange-Athol, MA and not Acton (which is a quiet suburb of Boston).

The whole thing was just kind of a trip! I was awake at 4:00 AM (which never happens), then WLW was getting chewed up (which also never happens). Then I actually got an ID from an ESPN affiliate. We ALL know THAT never happens. :)

I have NO idea why I put Acton in there and not Athol. I totally put it in my log book as Orange-Athol too. Thanks for the correction!

Aside from WGY and WBZ, I have almost NO luck with New England. Although I did manage to log my first Maine last month and my first Rhode Island earlier in the year. Next up is New Hampshire or Vermont.

New York, where WGY is, isn't in New England. Did you perhaps mean WTIC?
