720-WGN: New log in Bothell! 12/13/2010

Tonight, with a huge A level and small K level (excellent conditions), I logged WGN-720! I heard Chicago Blackhawks hockey, but first I heard mentions of the team they met tonight, the Colorado Avalanche. (NHL) I then heard a lucky ID that sounded like "We'll be back to the Blackhawks Postgame Show on 720 WGN", coming in at fair strength over a slightly reduced skywave of KDWN Vegas. This is my THIRD Chicago station logged in Bothell, the other two being WBBM and WLS.

Distance-1706 miles!

Good job snagging WGN with KDWN dominating in the west.

Nice. :)

I heard WGN once near San Diego, CA, a few years ago one night when KDWN was off for maintenance.  My other Chicago logging is WBBM - dug that out from under KKOH and splatter from 760 KFMB, whose 50kW is 7 miles from here.  Now... considering KFMB is at a 320° heading from me, I wonder if it might be possible to null them and hear WJR?  Although, last time I tried that, I heard El Himno Nacional Mexicano.

Good catch, crainbebo, but let me tell you my story. Sitting in a parking lot Monday afternoon here in Texas, about 75 miles southeast of Dallas, I flipped through a few frequencies and was pretty surprised at what I heard. This was just after 4 in the afternoon and there was still plenty of sunlight at the time. First I noticed KGGF 690 from Coffeyville KS, then checked 700 for the Asian programming on KHSE out of Wylie (east of Dallas) but it was gasping underneath KSEV from Tomball/Houston (and something else was there, maybe WLW). 710 was the usual solid signal from KEEL Shreveport, but the real surprise was on 720. Instead of the usual daytime suspect, KSAH from San Antonio, it was nothing but WGN with a crystal clear, strong signal. I was impressed.

Nice catch. My wishlist for 2011 DXing is to at least gets just one station in the east coast... but with KDWN dominating 720, and with occasional mess heard underneath the station, it probably won't happen.

Last year though, I was in Vegas and KDWN was off-air at 2AM. I didn't hear any talk, but I happened to have heard weak Regional Mexican music. Turned out to be KSAH San Antonio, which is really surprising considering they run 870 watts at night.

My experience in Houston was WGN and KSAH fight the good fight many nights, from critical hours into the late evening. Of course, DX in north Texas is dramatically different than southeast Texas, but KSAH can get out into its nulls at night. It helps in the Houston area that the Chicago stations don't make it down there during the summer with much strength.

Nice catch....especially with blowtorch KIRO right in your neighborhood.

I used to catch 'GN on a fairly regular basis in California before KDWN came on. And after that, I'd still hear it from time to time underneath. Never in Seattle, however....so that was definitely well done!

I caught WGN in Seattle in 1963, but of course DXing coast to coast was much easier then.

I am much closer to WGN (Pennsylvania), but the IBOC generally destroys my enjoyment of Blackhawks Hockey.
At least the St. Louis Blues are back on KMOX.

Got WGN booming in for a few minutes this past summer from Waterton Park, Alberta... near the common border of Alberta, British Columbia, and Montana. This was on a regular car radio receiver with antenna embedded in the windshield. WGN's chief engineer quickly responded with a Q.S.L. card on which he calculated the distance!

Earlier tonight, while in the car, I picked up 720 WGN here in Port aux Basques, although I *BARELY* heard it given the mess of overlay on neighboring 710 (WOR New York) and 730 (CKAC Montreal). Distance is the same as when I picked up WBBM 780 last year (and have picked it up a few more times lately). I'm hoping to pick out a better spot around town to see if I can get a bit clearer.

From Phoenix, Arizona and Oregon to New York City and Newfoundland, those Chicago stations are pretty impressive stations! At least in Newfoundland you don't have to worry about interference from Las Vegas and KDWN.

I bet you can get some good DX catches up there in Newfoundland, especially from Europe since you're a little further east than most Americans. Any luck with European stations?

Nicely done! I agree that Newfoundland must be a great spot for DX. And 720 must also be an interesting place to hang out....especially with CHTN gone. Do you ever hear the 720 from Greenland? Or any of the 720s from Europe?

I have heard East of Chicago before, with 760 WJR Detroit one lucky night, 1925 miles.

Crain,

Do you think CFZM 740 Toronto is possible from your area? They have a music format so they shouldn't be too hard to ID. I know you want to get east of Chicago and saw that you've logged 'JR in your area. Toronto is about 200 miles east of Detroit.

I'd love to get into the Pacific Northwest. The closest i've made it is SLC with KSL and a tentative CHRB 1140 reception. My little section of Michigan is not favorable for KOMO as their WMVP null is pointed right at me. I'm trying for Vancouver. I think that's my best bet.

From my experience in the Pacific Northwest KCBS puts in a pretty strong signal, but I suppose it can be nulled.

When KCBS San Francisco is nulled out, CBX Edmonton pounds in.
