730 WUMP on FM!

Just heard today that Sports Radio 730 "The UMP" in Huntsville will soon start simulcasting on FM 103.9. Have not heard an official launch time, but their website says it will begin in the coming days.

That's awesome! I was glad to see that the translator on 103.5 was able to move to 103.9 after WHWT signed on but simulcasting with 93.3 all this time is pointless for the translator. It's much more useful simulcasting 730 and bringing sports radio to FM in Huntsville. Maybe we will actually see better numbers from The Ump soon.

Putting the UMP on that 103.9 translator barely seems worth it, save for nights in the wintertime.

Is it just me, or does the new signal pattern stink compared to the old one? ???

(BTW, is the translator currently on air at 103.9?)

The signal is a lot worse than the old one was but is still not too bad compared to how small most of the other 10 watt translators are in the area. The old one was on 103.5 which was ofcourse forced off the air due to WHWT signing on. The new signal on 103.9 can't be as strong as the 103.5 signal was due to interference with WHWT and WZYP so its about as good as they could get it. I think its better used simulcasting the ump than simulcasting 93.3. Oh, and yes it is on the air. It has been for a couple of months now.

the signal is certainly better than 730 is, which is pretty much nothing at my house, with all the trees around. I'm sure the signal will also improve if they turn the stereo off. I noticed 94.5 Birmingham is coming in like a local almost all the time since it became WJOX.

Here's a follow-up to my original post. I noticed that all the talk about the 103.9 UMP simulcast had been dropped on air, and the blurb on the website had been taken down. I e-mailed Zack Bennett at the station and asked him about it. Here's the reply I got from him:

"Yeah, it's still in the plans, but we ran into some FCC red-tape which is going to slow down the process. Might be a few more weeks, might take a couple of months. We really don't know, but we're wading through it right now."

I guess we'll just see what happens.
