740 AM KCBS AM On Los Angeles Market

My prize dx log was about 20 years ago when I was in Maui I picked up KLIV (from my home town of San Jose) which was something due to the fact it didn't come in that good in San Jose and I received a Pa station both were not very good and was for a very short amount of time.

I almost forgot the famous WLS from the windy city (received from San Jose) I even received a QSL card from the cheif engineer (wow).

In Aug 2005 I was vacationing in Lahaina, Maui Hawaii and while waiting for my girlfriend from shopping I got KNX 10.70 coming in clear as a bell around 8pm Hawaii Time. I tried KCBS 740 as well but to no avail... but my local hometown KNX 10.70 was coming in clearly from the car radio. Still one of my fav DX moments (It was as if we never left L.A.) ::) JG

One June 2001 late-morning on Hwy 99 in Bakersfield, I heard BOTH KCBS and KBRT
battling it out at 740...

Ah, but have you ever heard the Portuguese format of KNGS-620 in Hanford duke it out with a Phoenix Suns basketball game on KTAR-620 our of Phoenix? Caught this on 101 around the red barn around Thanksgiving!

Its happens with KCBC 770 and KKOB 770 right at dusk in Clovis where KKOB takes over the rest of the night.

I believe KNX's signal is omni-directional and I think I remember someone on here saying that it's signal is especially strong, as it shoots out in to the Pacific and west toward Hawaii!

I mean, the dolphins need their news too!

I think it's available to all of the west coast and can also hit many states across the country... I got KNX 1070 in Las Vegas last year, same with KFWB 980, KFI AM 640, and AM 570 KLAC (very weak though). I tried getting KTLK AM 1150 but with LV's local KYDZ at 1140 I couldn't get it.

Last night i got 540 CBC radio from Regina and 960 from Calgary and 1010 from Calgary to, all from Concord no 1130 though

I've been able to receive 960 CFAC from Concord as well. I haven't tried 540 CBK yet nor have I tried 1010 CBR but I was very surprised about 960 CFAC almost overriding local 960 KKGN. If you look at radio-locator's map for KKGN, the local coverage area extends way past Concord, so it's very surprising. In regards to 1130 CKWX, if you get more towards the SF Bay (Berkeley) it's actually possible to receive 1130 with a nominal signal.

Amazing....4pm.....Not even close to night fall....and I was getting 850/KOA out of Denver?

They must have their transmitter on top of the highest Rocky Mountain??

KOA is in Parker, CO, a very flat area with loamy, organic soil which is fairly moist. It has a 5/8 wavelength tower, which is often preferred as it tends to push out the groundwave/skywave cancellation area farther from the transmitter site but also has a significant secondary high-angle componant that helps skywave at greater distances.

There is a pretty neat article at http://radiomagonline.com/transmission/radio_tall_am_towers/ that shows the relationship of taller antennas with skywave.

In general, AM antennas work best on low, flat, moist locations... the best being actually in the ocean or tidal basin.

Ive noticed the CBC stations dont say the calls at the top of the hour

Canada has different ID requirements than the US. Some countries don't require a call letter ID ever.

KOA doesn't really reach east of Chicago at night very well, but when the air is particularly clear, sometimes makes it to the Great Lakes when someone tries to DX them on a decent radio. Cleveland and Boston have had strong fulltime stations on 850 for decades.

Most countries don't even use call letters. Canadian stations, last I knew, only need to ID with their call letters, and the CBC stations don't even do that.

AM 540 from Sask. is probably one of the biggest night signals in North America, with their transmitter in a salt water lake on the prairie. CKWX News 1130 from Vancouver is highly directionalized, and there is a lot of phasing of its signal in Seattle at night (where I live). Comes in better to the south in the daytime. Wish they would just let it loose to the south, since there's not much on 1130 on the west coast at night (like there is on the east coast and midwest). Never hurts to be able to hear another "all news" signal to see what they're talking about. Happy Olympics, everyone.

The height of the AM antenna doesn't make any difference to skywave as far as I know. What does make a difference is whether there is nightfall between the transmitter and receiver and also whether there is warm air ducting taking place. Ducting does seem to affect the AM band a bit, though it's most prevalent with CB and low-band TV (channels 2 to 6) and FM stations to a lesser extent. In that case, if there is warm air between the transmitter and receive it seems to improve distant reception quite a bit.

I've heard air checks of CKLW (Windsor, Ontario, near Detroit) when it was a Drake consulted station in the 60s. They used the regulation Drake top-of-the-hour jingle, but it was "CKLW, Motor City.". So apparently, the Canadian government doesn't require the city to be mentioned.

I don't know about current practice, but in the 70s, the Mexican government seemed to require city and state - I remember "The Soul XPRS" "over" Los Angeles would ID "XEPRS, Rosarita, Baja California." In Spanish, naturally.

And, in case anyone thinks the topic has strayed too far away from the Bay Area, please note that the San Jose Sharks' outstanding color analyst Drew Remenda hosts a weekday sportstalk program on News Talk 650 (CKOM) from Saskatoon.

From his home studio in the Bay Area, one would presume.
