740am heard in ocean county

I was in the Ocean County Mall today and was picking up a signal on 740AM, the station was playing FANTASTIC oldies with no ID, no song title, no info whatsoever......the signal was very strong, it was during the day so it was not the Canadian station nor the religious signal from Chester, PA, too far for VCH......I had them pulled in for a few hours in the mall, then the strong storms came by and the static on AM was too bad to hear them, eventually I was heading back to Philly and lost the signal in the car around Lakehurst....could this be an AM pirate, the station was playing very good oldies, not what you hear on the bland dial anymore....with the exception of WMID.

The station is WNYH from Huntington, NY on Long Island. The daytime-only station is highly directional at 25kw but since it's on LI and the salt water is directly in its path, it helps to conduct and in essence shoot the signal right down the Jersey Coastline much as it does for the CT coastline to its north. It's very solid down to AC and good for about 10 miles inland and no more. Good mix of "nostalgic tunes" but by no means a "Major Market Player." The station has the potential to be much more but lollygags along begging for advertisers, something its done for years now and still no better off. A frequency with a signal like that and such a niche format could perform very well if programmed just right. You mentioned WMID, well this station tends to dig even DEEPER when it comes to classic "forgotten favorites" and some of which in all honesty should be forgotten but a refreshing change from the OVERLY-tight programmed playlists of today's oldies...Errrrrr "Classic Hits" stations.

As for the 100.1 in Ocean County thats a complete joke!! One day it leans 70's the next it has an 80's slant and as of late the format du juor on WJRZ seems to be "Classic Rock" because thats just what OC needs MORE of espcially since The Hawk is such a ratings success ::) Maybe "Classic Hits" will follow the path of CHR saturation in the Mon/Oc market... God Help us!!

Hope that solves your 740AM mystery...

;)

The oldies music you hear on 740AM (WNYH Huntington, NY) is filler. They are looking for brokered programming to fill the schedule.

Thanks for all the great info...the station was very strong and never knew of anything on 740 except for the Canadian nostalgia station and WVCH, but this was a refreshing change the music was fantastic.....although like you said not as good as WMID which I think is in a class by itself, don't know of any other station playing the stuff they do, but WHAT surprises me more and more every day....Its a shame the oldies are just a filler for 740, for being filler music, they really dig deep.... you would think they would play the same stale 200 if they wanted just to fill....but they go one step further...

Heh. Yeah. The Oldies are used as filler programming, but truth of the matter is, That is what has been running on 740 AM for the most part since Dr. Yoon bought the place several years back. Not many people have been taking advantage of buying time to host their own show. For the most part the brokered time has gone to infomercials. The only group to buy a large chunk of air time on 740 AM was One Caribbean Radio who bought time 7AM-10AM and 3PM-7PM (Weekdays) and several hours on the weekend. One Caribbean Radio Aired on AM 740 from October 08 until March 09. During the unsold blocks of time they still ran the oldies music and infomercials. Former WNBC-TV personality Asa Aarons even bought a weekly timeslot to do a consumer advocate show while "OCR" controlled 740's airwaves.

I haven't listen to 740 AM in a while, but last I knew there were a couple individuals buying time. One hosting a show dealing with listeners quesions about God. And another was a financial advice type show. That in addition to the infomercials.

Speaking of hearing long Island stations in NJ I was suprised how many stations I heard the other morning driving home to North Jersey from Cape May.....These are what I got:

92.1 WLNG - Mixing with WVLT in Southern Ocean
92.9 WEHM - Nice and clear from AC up to the 120's
97.5 WALK - Listenable most of the way with little interference from WNUW.
101.7 WBEA - Pretty strong around New Gretna with traces of WJKS
102.3 WBAB - Listenable in sports where there are no LP's or Translators.
102.5 WBAZ - Listenable in spots
103.1 WBZO - Pretty strong most of the way and really clear up in Monmouth
103.9 WRCN - Listened for awhile around the Forked River area
107.1 WLIR - Listenable around the Little Egg Harbor area before WWZY kicked in.

And the one station that was coming in like gangbusters and crystal clear all they up to at least LBI was WCXL-FM 104.1 from Kill Devil Hills, NC known as "Beach 104"......They really have some signal along the coast.

WCXL is 100,000 watts at almost 1,000 feet. It very frequently shoots up the coast into NJ, especially with nothing on 104.1 between here and there. Monster signal!

I picked up Party 105 from Seaside Heights to Pt. Pleasant driving on 35. Even though this station is not from Long Island, I also picked up Jam'n 107.7 from CT between Seaside Heights and Pt. Pleasant
