Thanks for sharing that audio. Great catch!

I meant to reply late last night but after reading your post, I listened to 747 for a while but didn't hear anything. There was too much interference from adjacent frequencies.

I know I asked this last winter and someone gave a list but can't find the post after doing many different searches so I'll ask again.

Does anyone have a list of European/African stations that have been catches here in North America? I found a list of European stations on the net but it listed many stations on each frequency and I don't know which ones are good ones to try for out of so many listed. A much more narrowed down list would be better.

I'd appreciate it if someone could post that list again of the TA stations that have been heard over here.

The best European / African station guide that I've found is:

http://www.hermanboel.be/emwg/online-mw1.htm

You're right though - it can still be difficult to know what to listen for. Spend some time looking over the frequencies on this guide and first look for the stations in western Europe and Africa with the big powerhouse transmitters as they will probably be the best targets. Here's my list of "best bet" stations you can try for which have been good here at night between about 8pm-11pm EST. I'm sure others will have suggestions too, maybe better suited to your location?

531 Algeria & Spain
549 Algeria
585 Spain
693 UK BBC
747 Netherlands
792 I've been hearing something Arabic here, chanting, maybe Libya
945 France
837 France
1206 France
1215 UK Absolute Radio
1521 Saudi Arabia
1557 France

I suppose the best way to hear these would just be to tune around the dial on your 10 khz setting and start listening for strong beat tones, which would hint at TA signals on the split channels, and then try to zero in on the strongest. These stations fade up and down too so I wouldn't expect to hear audio on the first go - you may have to park it one channel and wait for audio - assuming you found a strong carrier signal to begin with. If you get audio then you can try matching it up with the station's online stream. A good (but not complete) all-in-one source is:

http://delicast.com/radio

If I were in Florida then I would probably start with some of the big stations from France and Spain.

For people in the midwest, Caribbean ZIZ on 555 has been pounding in at night here too, better than I've ever heard them.

Thanks a lot for your help. That list you typed out is just what I was looking for.

I can use the other pages also to look further.

One station that also came to mind is 891 from Algiers, Algeria. I've heard that one had been received in North America and I now remember listening for it a couple times last winter.

I thought I may have briefly heard something then that matched their online stream but it was quite weak.

You guys in the eastern US are lucky...I don't suppose any of those stations are possible in California? For that matter, has anyone picked up any international stations (other than Mexico and Canada) in California? I've tried a variety of stations from the pacific as well as Europe, but no luck (so far).

I would add 873 and 1269 from Germany and 1377 from France to the list of frequencies to watch for...

531 Algeria has been very strong here after sunset, especially last night. No sign of the Netherlands on 747 last night.

About what time does Algeria start to come in? How long does it stay in? So the 530 from Ontario doesn't give much of a problem at your location? At times it's pretty strong here. The Cuban comes in stronger later at night and especially a couple of hours before sunrise. North Africa is but a dream right now, though I heard the 891 het supposedly from Algeria several years ago. I can null out WLS pretty good since they're something like 50 miles away from me and a shadow of their former self... I was getting the 747 here as a het last night here in No. IL, but weaker than normal. I have heard barely discernible audio on 747, but not good enough to record, nor positively identify. It's still in the "presumed" category... Any activity on long wave yet?

About what time does Algeria start to come in?

Algeria on 531 starts to come in here around my local sunset and then seems to peak around 9-10pm EST. Spillover from 530 Brampton can be bad, especially when they are playing music, but tuning to 531 in USB helps to dodge it. Here's some nice audio from a few nights ago. Algeria to Michigan:

531 Khz Radio Algerie 09OC10 0213 UTC

Conditions seem pretty bad tonight. The only audio I'm getting is again on 531, but much weaker and I can't verify the language. Hets seem much weaker tonight all around and there's a lot of lightning noise. As for longwave, I haven't heard any of the European broadcasters yet this season from here. Ditto for 1134 Croatia which seemed so easy to snag last year (maybe still too early in the year?)

That's a pretty good recording. There seems to be no heterodyne, so CIAO was absent then. Maybe I've heard Algeria then, I know that CIAO in Brampton, ON (suburban Toronto) is "Multicultural Radio" and they have these languages on according to their website, am530.ca:

ET UTC
06:00 PM - South Asian (Hindi / Punjabi) 2200
08:00 PM - Polish / English 0000
10:00 PM - Pilipino (Filipino) 0200

So CIAO wasn't broadcasting in Arabic in this time frame. In the overnight, some of the music sounds kinda like Arabic, but I really don't know the difference. So it's Polish now as I write this (0130 UTC), and the web stream has Polish right now. Does the Algerian Radio have a web stream to check against their over-the-air signal?

TP's are quite easy from the coastal areas, and quite a few are DXable farther inland.

Northern conditions can bring in anything from Japan and Siberia to Alaska. Otherwise Australia, New Zealand, a number of the Pacific Islands, Philippines, and various SE Asian countries are possible as well as closer in things like Somoa, Hawaii, etc.

One of the indicators of even greater distances is 1475 Kota Kinabalu, which is an RTM Malaysia station with 600 kw in Kabah. If it is roaring in, there are good possibilies for more exotic catches.

Deep South America is possible under some conditions, but most catches are Trans Pacific since the region is on 9 kHz spacing like Europe, making many of them have no domestic interference. I've heard a 250 watt Puerto Rico station from AZ (WRSJ-Bayamon-1560) just a bit inland, but no Europeans.

There seems to be no heterodyne, so CIAO was absent then.

CIAO was present during the time of this recording but you don't hear the carrier since the passband tuning was fine-tuned above 531, thus reducing most of the interference from 530 except for some splash over. A narrow bandwidth also helped when this was recorded. Passband tuning is a beautiful thing and something that I've come to really appreciate.

Algeria has internet streams, but I haven't had much luck getting them to work this week:

http://delicast.com/radio/Algeria/Radio_Algerie_1
http://delicast.com/radio/Algeria/Radio_Algerie_2
http://delicast.com/radio/Algeria/Radio_Algerie_3

According to the EMWG, 531 should be Radio Algeria 1, all Arabic.

Kilokat--what are you using for your antenna & what kind of radio?

There's some vacant land behind our house where I've laid out 500 feet of wire on the ground running E-W. Very simple, cheap, and effective. It's connected to a Perseus SDR with about 60 feet of coax so I could get the antenna away from the house (and the noise).

Good antenna setup. What is your radio?
